Cos at the Big Chill it's full of yummy mummy, Guardian readers that think it's cool to like Norman Jay although they've never heard him
One of life's mysterys Norman Jay. How the fuck has he made a living from being a fuckin shite DJ!?
but in rebuttal the big chill's a great festival, great selection of people, really easy going atmosphere, and an eclectic selection of live acts and dj's, saw sebatien tellier play la ritournelle on a piano, fucking superb it was, as well as the heritage orchestra, playing les fleur to round off the last set on a sunday night/monday morning, also saw gilles peterson kill it on a sunday afternoon, playing welcome to jamrock, a bit patchy and sunshine of your love, in one orgiastically fantastic banging set which wouldn't have been out of place at 2am rather than 2pm.
Bright times, Bright times.
anyway norman jay plays a norman jay set, he's not a shite dj, he's slightly pompous, and is prone to blowing his own trumpet, but he's got great tunes and he plays them well. If you don't like the way he plays, feel he isn't proficient in the dark art of mixing, don't go and see him play.
Personally I'd prefer to be by the good times bus at carnival than listening to rampage. But I'm against the intro verse chorus, next tune syndrome that seems to have overtaken most dj's nowadays. Play me the really good bit at the end, rather than slamming into the next throwaway 12" which is big at the moment...
