  • Hi Guys been working on this almost since my arrival in London 2 months ago,
tried to draw on all my bike interests, im sure a few of you gathered im an ex old skool bmx nut (especially raleigh burners) so tried to drop in some bmx inspired stuff and also love the classic racer look,
i was going to get a plug but love finding/buying parts and building as much as riding so bought a 1984 Raleigh Quasar, complete minus the wheels to work on, for me it was perfect - Raleigh, with the aero spec tubing that is found on the top end 80' raleigh burner's, i loved the colour and graphics and most of all it was affordable and fitted!
i knew i wanted a tan charge sppon and white deep v's the rest evolved from various sources. anyway, its lack a 1/2 link ybn reluctant chain (on its way), shimano 105 front caliper (on its way), 10mm dmr gold nuts for rear (on way) and white brake cable.
this is my first road bike and fixed bike so i've played it safe with double machined rims and fitting a flip flop with freewheel, i fully intend to ride fixed though.

full spec below the pics (didnt want to bore you with further text)
my favourite part is the nos raleigh branded alloy crank caps

i hope you like and all opinions are gratefully recieved, i know the frames not the best but hopefully you read my rationale and parts are transferable.

    All the best
    David

frame, forks, bars, cranks, stem are all original,
frame has been coldset for a 120mm track hub,
has a new sealed bb for good chainline
    gearing is 42 - 16
    headset is tange
    pedals / cages mks
wheels velocity deep v both machined, formula hubs, flip flop rear 16 fixed 16 free
    dia compe goldfinger brake lever
    charge spoon saddle
27.0 replacement seatpost (kindly donated by forum member)
    tyres 700 x 23 continental gatosrkin

  • Tyre choice fail
    Valve align fail
    Gonna grind'n'file the derailler hanger/braze-on?

    Funky paint
    Looks fun

not a fan of the gators!?! took me a while to choose the tyres heard good things about these in terms of robustness?

hehe tried my best with the valve align, i had a fast fading battery,

see what i can do with the derallier braze on i find it pretty unsightly, but trimming the seatpost and filing the gear lever nodules were as much filing/junior hacksawing as i could handle!

  • Want to trade one of those deep v rims for an unmachined one?

  • Don't listen to hippy, he's a cockwit.

He's a known Conti hater and anal when it comes to tyre label location.

  • Want to trade one of those deep v rims for an unmachined one?

    literally got them laced yesterday,
its in my mind for the future to relace the rear on an unmachined but not yet!

also for the furure i think one of the Raleigh guys i used to deal with who makes the custom and replacement bmx padsets for resto's is making me a custom top tube pad to continue the bmx related dna

hehehe, i didnt fit these but be sure when i do i will label align ( i actually mean it, kinda annoys me now u mentioned it lol)

Well the unmachined one i have for trade is currently a bit damaged (brake pad marks etc), it's getting powder coated end of next month though so it will be nice and fresh. I'll pm you nearer the time you might fancy it then.

  • thats a lot of pics...do you have them laminated, by your bed, within easy reach....

or is there no one to prevent you bringing her to the bedroom?

    what's her name? she's prurdey....

  • Is it just me or in the 4th pic down does that pedal look dangerously close to the ground?

  • Really nice build.

But dont get to attached to the frame, the basic 501 raleighs have a tendency to snap at the dropout when ridden fixed.

hhaahah, im actually negotiating terms with the lady of the bedroom to see if the bike can stay within the flat, so it may be within touching distance

ps remains nameless if i build up too much of it attachment it will remain unridden like all these did!....

    thanks man,
god forbid that day ever come, and if it does let it be when im stationary on a well padded surface

  • gatorskins are the bomb baby!
nice build! hope u have fun riding it. fuck the freewheel, it wont be needed!

thats a lotta young virgin steel....

i have a similar debate with the missus and the living conditions of 'Peaches Goldfinger', right now she's in the hall....

thanks man too true on the freewheel

  • Nice bike man, looks tasty

  • Is it just me or in the 4th pic down does that pedal look dangerously close to the ground?

it's just you - picture playing trick with our eyes, look at the other photos the pedal and ground distance is just fine.

  • i think it looks elegant.

    slack chain, tho.

  • Looks good. Where did you get the world champion tape on the handlebar stem? I had it on some hubs once, but don't know where you can buy it.

  • I love paintjobs that appear different colours from different aspects.
Think Klein had a few like that!
    Prepare to get addicted.
p.s. -gatorskins are fine if you don't skid around.

  • the basic 501 raleighs have a tendency to snap at the dropout when ridden fixed.

because it happened to you? user error probably.

    doesn't mean it's a tendency.
they have no more,or less, inclination to break when ridden fixed, geared or otherwise. if they're going to go, they're going to go.

20 year old cheap steel frames are a gamble anyway, you can't know how much rust there is inside.

Doesn't Sheldon reckon that rust is never a cause of frame failiure?

  • I must say, those cranks do look rather long, are they 175s or something. If it were me, I would seriously consider getting 165s. I doubt you would be able to take that onto the track, if you wanted to that is

hey man got it in ebay its not tape but small strips,
it was a tenner for a bunch which is so excessive i do have spare though if u want one pm me ure addy and i'll stick it in the post, u can have 2 if its for hubs like u say
