I'm running a magic gear on my current bike and (apart from the first week stretching the chain) i've had no problems. I guess it helps if you can measure properly and know exactly what GI you want to run. I agree not a good idea for a first bike or one that you want to run with a double sided hub tho. If you get it right it's gravy, you're not gonna pull the wheel out of the dropouts.
