Overtaking anyone is permission to race. Don't matter what they are riding.
-
• #3
What if they pass you when you're waiting at red lights?
when you passed them 2 minutes ago going twice their speed. -
• #4
You get to overtake them all over again.
-

When racing one must position oneself in space and time to hit every traffic light as it going from amber to red thus forcing your opponent to stop or risk running the light. This is possible on streets where you know the rhythm of the lights.

I'm ashamed to say that I'm guilty of the opposite. Every time a geared rider overtakes me I must race them.
It's childish and often dangerous but lots of fun.

and me too, smoked a lycra clad, carbon fibre wielding nutter just an hour ago on the chelsea embankment...
though it's not just geared riders that cause me to crank it....

I've only ever raced one person up in Manchester, a french student on a really nice carbon fibre roadie. I totally fucking smoked her through Rusholme, which gave me a fantastic sense of acheivement. But she was really attractive so I kind of wanted to slow down and get her number.

you beat a [french] girl in a race...good work.

Shouldn't this thread be in the 'Commuting' section over on bikeradar?
-

Or in the "let's all be awfully beastly" section on the other forum?

yes sir, i certainly have.
have you bothered to meet any of the hundreds of members who ride geared bikes as well as fixed gear bikes? you don't have to prove yourself around here by slagging off other cyclists.

She started it! I admired her frame (a hur hur hur) and she said "I just like to go fast". If that is not invitation to race hell knows what is.
Plus it's not like she was on a shopper or anything. I retain my pride at beating girls. There are certainly girls on this forum who would slay me.

Would you say you'd slay Slaytanic?

I'd never say such a thing, considering Slaytanic as his name and thus, presumably, Slaying is his game?
Also, probably not, I am weak like kitten. Also I kind of relate number/frequency of posts up here to in some way equate with cycling speed/proficiency. Which is clearly untrue, as it would make Hippy as fast as a fucking jet fighter. Also yay for the Smiths! I was helping a band out up here and the only thing they wanted to do during the day was have their picture taken outside Salford Lads Club. It's like the only landmark people know in Manchester. Fair enough though, I couldn't name too many either, before I came here.

This is not the first time this has happened: bit late for work, going at a fair clip, I overtake a geared bike whose rider seems quite happy ambling along. A minute or so later he pulls up behind me at some lights and I can see him looking at my drivetrain. After that his pace really picks up and it's like he's determined to not be 'beaten' by a bike with one gear, runs red lights and all sorts. Anyone else had this?
