Pedals like that arent designed for 'whatever the hell shoes you want to wear' but hard soled cycling shoes.
I have some nice campagnolo ones and also used to have the shimano ones on a geared bike. If you wear thin soled shoes like vans, on long rides you can feel the shape of the pedal dig into the soles of your feet. When wearing thicker soled onitsuka's etc, you can feel the metal cages irratating your toes.
The most comfortable secure cages for fixed on the street is MKS mtb platform cage pedals, with the large plastic toeclip. The large plastic clips hold your foot deepdly and securely and fit one a wider range of shoes, easily fitting around chunky modern skate shoes aswell as skinny ones. Unlike metal cages which are more size specific, more likeley to snap & make a horrible noise when scraping along the ground.
Flat mtb pedals are also double sided which is convenient if your practicing tricks, in a fluster at traffic lights etc.
In terms of those shimano pedals, I had a 105 version with soft grey rubber toeclips, these were really comfortable and secure.
In general, I think getting a toeclip that fits properly is most important, then start worrying about double strapping.
I read that from a few different users but its never been a problem for me at all.

I've found that i can skid a load better, and trackstand better in my toeclips vs my clipless set up.
however, long rides will always be in clipless. -

I can't see how it would differ other than a mental/confidence thing.
Psych fail. :P -

after my fail seen below i am considering trying clipless for fixed. from other threads i see the fav is time atac pedals. how are these for skidding? skipping?

Great.

To be fair, I have no idea. I use SPDs and they do the trick but most brakeless riders on here favour ATACs so try 'em
-
• #61
think i might!
-
• #62
hippy you brakless as it were with spd's?

I can't see how it would differ other than a mental/confidence thing.
Psych fail. :Pneither can I.
time atacs all the way, except for the time being.
I used to use spds when brakeless up here (on ugly bike), but had a large number of unintentional unclippings, and hurt myself.
with times had no issues. -

Nope. I am a big fan of brakes.

Chaps, the only way to go is to get these
coupled with these
Bloody expensive straps but well worth the extra few pence, the Some XX Oppy Clips manage to keep the whole affair looking rather dapper too don't you know
-

those kashimax straps are fucking ludicrously expensive... extra pennies? more like scores of pounds. don't see how they're any beter than toshis anyway. also think the 4-gate soma clips are a bit extravagant too. Christ i'm argumentative tonight, sorry.
-
• #68
Well whatever about the straps being an extravagance but I'll have to step forward and defend the honour of the Soma 4-gate clips, they look fantastic and the simply must do a wonderful job of holding the whole ensemble together... I'll be ordering a set for the rebuild of the FORTress as soon as I top up the old Paypal!!

Plastic clips, cheap nylon straps, gaffer tape. Indestructible.

I still use clips and straps on my track bikes for racing- I have raced with Looks on the track but never totally confident in a sprint.
I have manged to wind two straps through both Campag and Shimano pedals. One strap goes through the slot in the toe clip, the other in front of it.
I have the usual leather straps but have had better success with "cloth" ie nylon straps as it doesn't stretch, and they're cheep as chips too. Works a treat.
(of course being an ardent racer I wouldn't be going near chips would I ??? >;-)))) )

I wanted to go for the MKS toe clips as they come in XL large size and I have size 10-11 shoes. I looked online and couldn't find many places. One of them was this one:
http://www.jejamescycles.co.uk/id27876.html
but the logo looks like Cavendish Cycles and the website seems dodgy.
Anyone know a good website to get the clips from?Additionally: does anyone know of plastic toe clips that come in XL or at least L size for bit feet/shoes?
thanks

They carry a screwdriver to tighten/loosen their straps :)

I'm sure size L would be fine for size 10. I'm size 9 and M clips suit me fine.

work well!
