  • What equivalent security is there for non-hollow hubs, i.e. wheels with no quick-release skewers? Are there no security nuts of some kind I can use?
The pitlock is only for hollow hubs as far as I can figure out...

  • ^ read post 18 in this thread.

  • Or swap the axles in your hub to a hollow one. Depends on the hub though...

  • was just looking at these on hubjub today as chance would have it.

also remember a bike shop guy mentioning dripping wax into allen key bolts, wish i had done this to my thomson seat post and brooklyn seat! =(

  • for what is essentially a "modified boltt and skewers" they are remarkable overpriced...
Priced themselves out of the UK market if you ask me...
    The price is a joke...

  • I was looking at pitlock skewers however they cost £30+ for a pair. There are some pairs on eBay (Tran-X and ETC) however some reviewers mentioned the skewers snapped!

    Could you:
    a) secure skewer on front wheel only (assuming QR rear is locked)?
    or
    b) plain allen key skewer on front (or will London thieves still make the effort to steal the front standard wheels?)

I have QR on front and rear and assuming this will last about 1 second in London...

    Advice?

  • ive taken a pitlock off in 2 seconds with a portable angle grinder, theyre good but as everyone says not full proof.

  • grinder straight to the key part, straight on. Falls off in two seconds trust me. Knew someone who bought a bike with one on and didnt have the key.

One way to spot a stolen bike..

  • this may have been covered in other threads but a search didnt return anything.

pitlock seems to have have brought out kit for solid axles, anyone using them? and know anywhere good in london to buy?

cycle surgery has little range, hubjub told me they weren't really good for track bikes, not got to london fields yet, my mate got some in stokey but that's skewered...

  • Multi Grooves is the man.....he's got a load on his bike

  • I've got them too, but not for a solid axle (front wheel only). Not necessary for rear, so whether it's a track bike or not shouldn't make a difference.

Hubjub do the kit for seatpost, stem and front wheel. All you really need.

  • Cycle Surgery stock them, as does hubjub.

The keyw ith cycle surgery is just to find out which of their stores have the one you want.

London fields also do them, as per pitlock website.

I only ahve front wheel at the minute, but will get the others too.

You can even get them for breaks!

i have emailed them about rear wheels - although I normally use the mini d on the back, I don't think you can ever have too much security!

  • But I think thats just a different length.

The problem with pit locks is that they're not supposed to be that tight - you can put too much torque into them. I think it would be unsafe on a horizontal, wouldn't it?

  • I believe those will not work with track axles. wrong size.

  • I recently bought a bike with pitlock skewers to secure front and back wheels. I now need to getthe front wheels off. I can't seem to get the pitlocks to budge and wondered what the best way to get rid of them would be. It seems like an alan key slot but none of my alan keys will grip it to undo ? Are there different dimensions hexagonal / septagonal alan key slots to pitlocks or am I just not using the correct diametre alan key ?

My search below only seemed to bring up GRINDER solutions am looking for a more technical solution if possible.

  • Pitlocks have 1 of 250 versions of special allen key fittings. Can you not get the code off the seller? When you buy them you get a code (like with kryptonite keys) so you can get replacements
Then you could contact Pitlock and they would send you a new set of keys to get them off

Otherwise I think you may have to resort to the grinder

  • Dremel a slot and then unscrew them with a flat head screwdriver.

  • Are you sure you mean pitlock?

Pitlocks don't look like allen bolts, more like oddly shaped nuts in a recess. If that makes sense.

    Allen bolts

    Pitlock

But yes, you should be able to get the code off the seller if they are pitlocks.

  • ah maybe they are not pitlocks then they look more like the alan key option
i guess i just need to find a few more alan key sizes

  • Thieves just use mole grips to crush and hold the heads of pitlocks so they can be undone- obviously this is a one shot deal for the pitlock.

  • There is a tool (can't remember the name) that uses a five sided drive, as opposed to six. They are used on some car parts to prevent the general public tinkering. You can get the bits....if you know the name!

Torx... is the name I was trying to remember.

  • Gotcha! This?

  • Are you sure you don't have 5 sided bolts? Allen keys will not work in these, if you have a good relationship with a bike shop they will probably lend you one.

(Bike nerd cap on) Oh and Clefty there are 256 types of pitlock key (bike nerd cap off)
There is also a way to take pitlocks off very quickly without the key that won't cause damage but the public forum is not the place for this information.
They are the best security skewers despite this.
