    formatting not my format.

  • Anyone else interested in doing it on New Year's Day, by the way? A couple of us are thinking of leaving at about 2am (once we've got bored of fireworks, etc.) and starting the year with a sub-zero swim and a fry-up...

If I'm in London I'd be mad keen, keep us posted

  • Count me in for that too, i'm heading back to Ireland on the 19th, so want to get as much riding done before then, in short, if there's a ride happening, count me in.

    Hello Crispin,

sorry for being thick, are you keen to come along or having a laff? ;)

As numbers are small we'd better co-ordinate properly.

    Definite:

    1. mmccarthy
    2. Oliver Schick

    Possible:

    1. Emilia?
    2. Texas?

Based on what mmccarthy and I would prefer, the current idea is to leave 10pm from Hyde Park Corner under Wellington Arch, get to Brighton in the middle of the night, perhaps 4-5-6 hours with decent riding and not too much stopping (I've done it in three hours in the daytime from Croydon), so 2-4am, visit a 24-hour cafe to be found by Guerillaphoto and then perhaps ride back, which I'd be keen on if I have company.

    Sound good?

Alternative plans gladly considered. Still two days to go.

Please, if you want to come along, let us know beforehand, if you just turn up we may well miss you!

  • Hey folks, I'm going to be in London from NYC the weekend of the 13th and will be riding down to Brighton that Sat

    Hello John,

I notice no-one's replied yet, have you been able to start your own thread in the meantime? No problem with posting in this thread, BTW.

The bikely route looks great. A couple of quick questions:

    1. Is there a cue sheet with the whole route together? I found one for the second half of the ride, but couldn't find the first part.

No, I don't think there is one. I suppose it's probably because people know London, and quite frankly in London a route sheet isn't that much use!

    1. Can you recommend a decent map of the area? With more than just motorways & A roads listed?

The standard map format in the UK is Ordnance Survey mapping. You probably want some Landrangers:

Two or three will cover London to Brighton. Good and detailed.

Visit Stanford's in Long Acre in Covent Garden when you get to London to buy maps.

    Happy riding,
    Oliver.

  • I rode to Brighton on Monday morning at around ten and even though the wind was predominantly from the side and rear it was still quite chilly.
Make sure you guys take good socks and gloves.

    Nice find, |³|MA3K.

  • I was serious but I'd have to literally see how I feel on Friday afternoon now. Well up for it though, as I'm sitting here now.

Sounds like a definite yes, can't back out now, you've signed a contract.

Great, we'll have to see how dry it is. I found conditions a little too uncertain today for my liking and there were several tales of early morning stacks on the slippery thread today.

Michael (mmccarthy) and I are planning to meet up on the ride tomorrow night and I notice you'll be around, too. Lists never lie. So that's a good opportunity to plan a bit. Usual stuff needs sorting, like who brings the banana guard, the life buoy, the emergency signal beacon.

+1 to MA3K for the sock tip. I noticed at TrixieDix that that's currently the one chink in my armour.

I think I'm beginning to understand why you're called McCarthy.

Haha thank you (i'm taking it as a compliment regardless of your intention) had a few history-studying friends say things along those lines, they got ignored though, on the basis that they were studying history.

No idea why people study history, there's no future in it...

Link to the whole route directions.

There is one mistake in it tho - just delete the line that mentions Lindfield and Haywards Heath.

    Good luck!

  • Thanks for all the help, guys! Top marks coming your way. Well, +1. 8]

I just got some winter socks today and will be trying them out on the pajamas ride later. I'll be riding my blue-and-white 61cm Fuji and wearing a red jacket.

  • Just got in there and my hand's a bit iffy from the spill earlier, i'm not 100% if the ride is a good idea, but i'll check in later with an update, fingers crossed it goes away =D

  • I'm definitely not going to be there. :(

I like the idea, but in practice I'll be far too tired from the day's work, and looking forward to bath and bed. And I don't have thick enough gloves. And I've a party to go to. Is that enough excuses?

  • Is that enough excuses?

    No

    Priorities, priorities, priorities.

  • No

    Priorities, priorities, priorities.

So what are your excuses, then, Clive? ;)

  • My training schedule requires me to be in Richmond Park early Saturday morning...otherwise and if it were not for family commitments, post work stress related exhaustion and being fat and slow, I would be with you.

That'll do! Another time for sure. Except for being fat and slow--that's a barefaced lie. ;)

Sorry to hear you can't make it, Emilia, I'm sure one of these days we'll manage to meet up on a night ride! Have a great time at your party!

  • Hey, i'm not sure if my hands are gonna be up for this, when had a spill last night over some steps (which of course I saw at the last second) and went over on my side and buggered up my fingers and wrist on my right hand, if I can make it i'll send you a message at some point, i'm really sorry about this, but if we can reschedule i'd still love to do it, once again apologies, I was really looking forward to it.
