Thank you for your response. The video of the Tokyo Dome velodrome came from a television documentary on Keirin racing that was featured on the European sports channel a few years ago. I borrowed the video tape of this from Canadian velodrome builder, Peter Junek. If you would like to get in touch with Peter Junek he could give you all the details. 50's Japanese old Keirin racer brake pics.

1950's EVEREST Keirin racer

This was used because of the Roading training.
Traffic was not severe in 1950.
This brake might be for the emergency.

Like the saddle brake - how does it work? Does the rider just slide off the back of the saddle to operate it?

I'll be in Shizuoka City over New Year and I didn't realise there was a track close to the station.

Shizuoka Keirin track holds the race.(2009.Jan.9~11 and 17~19)

Rider moves the hip backward and uses the brake.

History of Japanese professional woman Keirin race

Woman Keirin started as an open race when Kokura Keirin was held in November, 1948.
It became an official program in 1949 the next year.

Afterwards, woman riders that 18~19 years old registers at first becomes about 30 years
old and has gained a lead physical strength and ability.

Moji Keirin race (1951)

Woman riders targeted in the ticket, lost the interest of the fan gradually, and the Nagoya Keirin race of holding became the last race of woman Keirin race on September 8, 1964.

The last professional woman keirin race(1964)

All woman Keirin riders' registration was blotted out dated October 31, 1964, and the Japanese professional woman Keirin race was abolished.

Rider of the name said Mr.Hisateru Sakurai(57 Y.O.!!) to this Tachikawa Keirin race participates.
He is very strong and famous rider that became Japan Keirin champion before.

Frame that he has is VENUS frame used when winning the championship in 1975.

(The VENUS frame atelier has already closed.)

He finish the professional Keirin rider life of 37 years tomorrow.
He retires tomorrow his last race.

Many our friends go to celebrate the last race of him.
