  • 'better not let this chain pin come all the way out..easy now..shit'

were my last words last night, before spending 2 hours trying various methods of getting a chain pin back in a KMX BMX chain....

anyone got an unusual bodge that works? tried pliars, hammer, chain tool and various combos of all three

or am I resigned to buying new chain?

    :(

  • Did you keep the extra links?! someone will have a spare for you..
I cant think of an easy way to get the pin back in... try a vice?

  • Place link in chain tool with another link in place (as if you were joining), swap spindle of chain tool with larger headed (reinforced steel) nail. Use pliers to hold pin straight and tighten chain tool.

Failing that, I've found that removing the chain tool handle and adding a vertical vice around the top of the links and base of the chain tool to be handy at keeping things in place whilst you drive the pin in.

  • I've done this a few times. Stick the pin onto the extractor pin of the chain tool using a small piece of chewing gum and put it in the fridge to set.

Then - carefully - screw the exractor, with pin on the end, into position on the chain and tighten it in. The gum will hold it in place whilst it's pushed in.

    Sounds insane, but it works.

  • HTFU and headbutt it in.. or if you're busy headbutting someone else.. yell at the pin until it does what it's damn well told.

Ive done something similar with a blob of blu tack, didn't put it in the fridge though. Fucking fiddly but did the trick!

  • The simplest way of resolving this is a pair of mole grips. align the pin and the link in the jaws of the grips, give it a gentle squeeze and it should slight straight back in. Will need tweaking with the chain tool, but it's a 2 second job. Little tip I picked up working in a bike shop.

  • cheers all, will give them a go - have ordered another chain just in case - what a bummer though, brand new chain!

Cock the hammer - cock the hammer, it's time for action!!

yay, mole grips and a little bit of luck, my man!!

    Cheers!

  • sandpaper the edges of the pin so it'll slide in ok.
That's what i had to do.

The mole grips worked? good job! :)

  • yep worked a treat - cheers!

  • ok so i was changing my chain, and the shitting tool pushed it out, like properly out
and now i cant get it back in, and my chain is too tight for me to take out any more links, and i havent got another chain, or even the original one
any suggestions as to how to get the pin back into the chain???
    thanks

  • Where are you?

  • west london. richmond twickenham area

  • Chain Masterlink?
Do you need it right now?

  • im sure if you go to evans kingston my friend ed will help u out- bit far though like

  • its not a masterlink. i was just taking out two links as the chain was properly slack. and i just cant get the pin back into the chain.
but i kinda need my bike to get around tomorrow.
if not i can get another one tomorrow evening. but ideally i would like to be able to get the fucker back in, tried hammering and heating the end of the chain, so the hole would expand but nothing

  • I was suggesting it as a solution.
Those pins are a bitch toget back in, so just replace what you need with a masterlink.

  • It can be done. One end of the pin is slightly narrower than the other, I think. It took me an hour to get one back in once with a chain tool but I eventually cracked it

  • I ended up breaking the tool i had and bending someone elses trying to get a pin back in, i personally wouldn't recommend it, but if it can be done..

  • all you need is an extra chain link, I'd happily give you one but I'm in Brixton, do not attempt to put back a pin which you have pushed out, you don't need a master link, just a link from another chain, V.simples...

  • Nice Dancing James might have one...

  • How would you attach the new link to the chain?
Im missing something, there is a void in my knowledge, and it is growing

  • !/8th? or 3/32nd
