If you have a couple bucks to spend try either of these. they are mighty nice and they are downtown. Don't stay uptown and especially don't stay midtown for god sake! If your going to be doing any riding or drinking downtown is where you want to be. Soho and Tribeca are good because it's quite posh but it's also quite arty. Robert Deniro owns half of Tribeca. They are also really close to the lower east side, Ludlow street, and the west village. So your set up to go in any direction and end up with some great neighborhoods and places to go.
While your there go to JONES (cajun restaurant) on Great Jones Street it will blow you mind. Best sould Jukebox in NYC!
Have fun!

Craigslist is your best bet, last time I was there I paid $100 a night for a fleapit of a room in Chinatown... Great location but really didn't wanna go back there at the end of a long day... Places in Brooklyn are way cheaper, but you probably already knew that...

If you're going to NY on a budget and fear Jack Crank's Sofa.... for $400 a week you can get a teeny room with queen size bed in a flat on 27th St @ 7th. it's all pretty pokey - the girl who rents it is cool too - but hardly saw her. worked out pretty well for me when i went out for a few weeks this year. literally just went back to sleep. . . PM for her details...

Hey all,
Guest from the NYC fixed forum here - I'm in grad school in Princeton, NJ, and this week I saw a fixed gear on campus with a London FGSS spoke card.
It was an orange frame with a curved seat tube, sugino 75s, brown brooks b17, cinelli track drops with green grips. Is this anyone's bike? If you're around, let me know if you want to hang out in Princeton or NYC!

Can anyone point me to either a good website for finding hotels in New York or (even better) to a cheap but nice hotel in manhattan? I'm not looking for a dorm type thing or a ymca, but rather a simple hotel room with bath...
thanks..... -

... Also don't forget to enquire if the location is inhabited by roaches little buddies (democrats or not), they are quite common in various NY ho(s)tels.

big bump.
I'm out in NYC 31st Oct - 6th Nov.. wondered if anyone knew how i could get hold of a bike (pref fixed) for a day or two whilst i'm over there to have a roll around.
My missus is running the marathon and i would really like to ride the route beforehand, anyone have any idea for how long before the roads are closed / how strict they are about people coming through on bikes before the marathon starts etc. Or ideally any organised rides which follow the route?

My good lady wife wants to take my self and the 2 daughters over there next summer. June or July are the probbable months
We'd be there for a week . Any advice on a family friendly hotel in Brooklyn or a an apartmment. The girls are 12 and 15 so you can work out what they want to do and where we want to stay.
GLW want's to go to Manhattan. I am not persuaded that's a good idea.
Thanks in advance

David Byrne's take on cycling in NYC
http://video.nytimes.com/video/2009/10/13/nyregion/1247465140390/david-byrne-live-on-two-wheels.html
I haven't been there, but http://www.thejanenyc.com/ in the West Village has tiny rooms at $99/night and a website that looks like it came out of a Wes Anderson film.
In Brooklyn, I make my parents stay here http://www.houseon3st.com/ for $155/night and they get the whole parlor level of a brownstone.
The perceived need to be "centrally located" is moot in NYC. Public transportation doesn't shut down and you won't be stranded if you get blind drunk late at night, so don't short yourself by staying in Disneyfied midtown if you don't have to. The city is too interesting for that!
