  • You should really try to grab a fork with canti and rack mounts. It'll make your life a lot easier, promise. I have some of that stuff and I'm wishing I had more. I'll up some pics later. You know, once I actually finish the bike and take them...

also not very easy to find... surly makes one tho

    Soma and Thorn (SJS) also.

    and kona

  • The Surly fork won't that frame cos it's 1 1/8" threadless. You might be better off starting with a touring frame that has canti mounts and eyelets and clearance for mudguards.

which takes me back to my initial problem of not being able to find a proper touring frame here in austria....

yeah but how is a brand new long haul trucker "the classic british touring bike" ?

    i want the classic look
    nice tubes and lugs
    ...

btw: i don't like this shop and you'd probably have to wait months to get a frame delivered..

Good point - what about germany or switzerland? I've seen some awesome track bikes on german ebay, but haven't looked for touring stuff. I guess it might be all new stuff with those funny butterfly handlebars they like so much. If the UK shipping is that bad you could buy something on UK ebay and take an easyjet flight here, spend a weekend in london and take the bike back.

Iz trufe. But canti mount 1" touring forks really aren't that hard to come by man. Just ask around at any weird, used bike, non-hipster ripoff shop. Shit, I'll be Jos and Keith can find you one no problem.

You make a good point that the LHT isn't the "classic euro touring bike" but you can definitely do a lot with a little there. Right now my build is based around a light gray Surly cross-check that's been totally debadged and it definitely has that classic feel. I know there's definitely an argument against it, but at this moment, working on a definite budget, I'm sitting in the "it's the motion of the ocean" camp... (pause).

Things like leather tape, canvas bags, metal fenders, stylish bars all give it that "classic feel. Shit, I'd even say that some of my components work better than classic stuff (well, in theory, you know how all my shit breaks all the time.

never managed to measure it up today, but coming soon.

  • YouTube - Cyclists' Special - part one

ha ha yes, old components can be a bit funny (like my NR deraillieur that is sprung the wrong way around so you shift toward you to change down!). Funny how lovely looking brakes somehow don't seem quite so lovely after bombing down a few hills. Especially for people who have just been riding fixed wheel and riding freewheels with two brakes suddenly seem a little out-of-control in comparison.

  • classiclally styled modern? (thanks for the love skully)

using the look stem just to get my positioning dialled in, will then move to a pearl or technomic, depending on what's required. haven't fitted the lowriders yet, haven't been out on her properly (damn uni!), but will do very soon.

  • Dibs on that Holdsworth, even though it's not for sale yet! Will PM you details.

  • Lovely looking BJ hassanr - personally I would have chosen silver mudguards but it looks great. Was it custom or is that the stock touring frame?

  • cheers momentum, nothing custom though, just fancy paint work - it's their standard 'world tour' frameset.

  • Was just wondering - the paintwork looks fantastic. Have you done any touring with it yet?

  • Between that video and that bob jackson I'm having a fucking stellar morning on the internet. Seriously, that video just made me so stoked to be headed off in to the country this weekend for some guns, fine liquors, and "randonneuring." Shit, this is what it's all about son.

That Jackson is exactly the steez I'm talking about. Perfect blend of classic style (brooks swift, leather tape, lugged steel, cantis) with modern tech where it counts (drivetrain, racks, stem for proper fit... well at least temporarily...)

My turn to step in. Sorry about the horrible shots and the incomplete build. Front rack for my handlebar bag, better brakes, perforated leather tape, and a shit ton of miles to come.

  • I like your bell end.

have i told you how much i hate you recently? what are you doing tonight. come out to the midnight movie.

  • unfortunately haven't had a chance to go for a proper ride on it yet, university seems to get in the way... but have a few trips planned for when the dissertation is handed in: london to nice, short highland tour, and hopefully the lake district, all in the next year or so.

@chris - no you haven't but i just assumed the sentiments hadn't changed. can't do films tonight, too much reading/writing to do. and don't forget about thanksgiving! (27th)

@jack - is that one of those bells from freshtripe? i need to get me one of them...

  • Thanks. Tapped spacers are the jam. I'd prefer to tap the stem though.

come to the foundry then... i'm 22 now you have to come out.

I will be there for thanksgiving... or in Berlin.
