    no.

  • Thank the lord.

  • Scientific computing is obviously very mathematical. If your good with programming / developing F.E.M, Finite difference / volume methods then that's a good start. You don't need to be a computer expert for scientific computing initially (well you need to be able to program but scientific code is in general not the best written code out there) you need to learn the computing stuff at a high level eventually but the main requirement is the maths.

My maths is probably my best subject, so I should be okay, wanna move into it slowly.

  • Hippy is just jaded. Computers are wonderful and programming is one of the most satisfying things there is behind riding on a beautiful sunny day out in the country, down a big big hill you just made it over. That's how good it is.
Of course, returning to my original point... you have to have passion for it and really love it through and through. If you don't enjoy what it is you actually do, then all of the stuff that goes with it will beat it out of you and wear you down. If programming doesn't do it for you, then you have little chance of having any job satisfaction when you encounter the bureaucracy around it.

    What he said.

  • just as well, considering the last effort

What was the last effort? Didn't you like where I put the red light?

BSc in Philosophy & Economics from LSE here. So 50% a philosopher, maybe.

If anyone is considering studying philosophy and is looking for some advice, I'd say to have a think about what kind of philosophy you're interested in. I didn't, but got lucky, as LSE solely deals with analytical philosophy - I spent my time studying logic, philosophical logic, theory of choice/rationality, that kind of thing.

Now I have a job as an analyst in the tech industry - fun! :)

  • Tech industry anal is pretty nice.

  • Yup, everyone will either get f*cked by google or microsoft at some point

  • 'tis very true. But then, both care only about markets of a certain size and strategy leading to such markets. There is tons of room around the giants to carve out a good living without being bothered by those giants.

  • true, true - all depends on where you are on the curve, though ;)

  • My useless degree is microbiology...because all my microbes....bacteria, fungi and virues always died.....so i switched to history.....now that is not useless.....but i would say that....English Lit and Drama....is also useless!....In my opinion.

Degree or no degree, you're just dotty.

  • And your flag's the wrong way round.

    Boast post.

  • And your flag's the wrong way round.

Flag? I thought that was a clothes-washing care symbol: do not beat or scythe.

  • First degree: English
    Second degree: Gender Studies
    Current job: cycle courier
(...and have already forgotten the title of my masters thesis.)

I think degrees are only useless in the wrong hands. I'm sure plenty of English and gender grads have gone on to fulfilling and profitable careers in management consultancy or whatnot. I'm just a born waster (and have an aversion to suits).

Too much time spent arguing bollocks in the Hyde Park Tavern then? ;-)

It's a bit depressing to think that that's a 'fulfilling and profitable' use of an English degree, though, isn't it.

Sorry for the bump. Interesting thread.

  • probably better than being a grammer nazi stalking internet forums.
