  • I've been coated a few times for white powder...

  • I love the way when I clicked on the 'Posts' links to see the most recently updated posts, 'White Powder Coating' was displayed right above 'Hipster or Not?'

  • @craptree... might be getting a new frame and would be up for jumping in.... Glossy Raleigh red FTW!?

When's this half term you speak of?

  • @Tynan - HA!

  • Sorry to hijack thread, but I'm in a bit of rush to get this done during half-term (I work in a school).

I'm looking to get my bike powder-coated and lacquered at Armourtex, coloured Raleigh red (like this http://www.frankencycle.com/images/red%20raleigh.JPG).

Anyone want to join me and share the costs?

    Thanks!

    What's your gear ratio??

  • illy I have more then one...PLEASE DONT HURT ME!! hides. I have friends who ride fixed...does that make me more acceptable?

Broker...half term starts from now, and ends in a week. I work in a school see, and have no time to go to armourtex during the day normaly.

Now some people may be thinking why I'm here when i clearly dont ride fixed...well despite that this site has been wealth of information on my journeys of building bikes...so thought i may help a few people that may want to get things coated, seen?

  • is this white powder-coating shindig still happening? i've got a shoebox full of stuff here all ready...

  • Do graphite frames exist?! Graphite is good for drawing, not sure if the same applies to bikes...

No, of course not! But my point was that the only form of carbon you could powdercoat is graphite because I thought that that is the only form of carbon that conducts electricity.

However, I was wrong, a quick google search revealed that carbon fibre does actually conduct electricity quite well. Whether an actual frame would conduct well, with all that resin coating it and mixed into it, is another matter.

edit: just saw this on Bike Forums:

The answer is yes, you can make normal ol'powdercoat stick to carbon components. That mustard fork in particular had the paint sandblasted off, and as noted in the caption, the powdercoater walked into a room sized oven heated to 450 or so degrees and sprayed the fork by hand so the powder liquefied mid-air between the gun and the fork.
    Weird, but it worked.

Other forms of carbon are conductive just not greatly.

But, Carbon composites are usually made with a mix of resin to hold it together, so its only as conductive as the resin.

Furthermore Carbon Composite products are commonly cured at room temperature I believe, so shoving it in a powder coaters oven would probably complelety melt the structure, although Im just going on assumptions.

  • You took a bit too long to write that - see edit.

  • Well if you have high end carbon forks, it may well be in your budget to get some high quality enameling done to it. Some alkyl enamels can be air dryed, and are very tough, then you can put a clear coat on for super durability. Would be quiet expensive though...

Anyway whos up for this el cheapo powdercoat??

  • ^ Quite possibly in for this.... Can't PM you, so PM me and we can arrange. Won't have the frame till midweek at the earliest though and might be longer!?

  • On 2nd thoughts....

  • i would like to get a pair of drop bars powder coated!!
    i PM'd you craptree....

  • Just leave it all outside: it's raining white powder right now!

I love snow and snowjacked threads :-)
