Did that and put them in the warmest spot without putting them too close to the radiator, the tounge and inners appear to be made from ridiculously absorbent padding!

I think doubles would probably feel more secure if you're used to the contact you have with SPD's.

Are you sure you did not line your shoe with a sanitary towel? The ones with wings do make good insoles (they stay put) however you need to change them when wet as they never dry out quite right.
