Used to have all sorts of problems with SPDs, they would either fail to release causing slo-mo side fall action or I would slacken them off to avoid this leading to involuntary release and totally screw up the climb I was attempting to tackle.
Switch to egg-beaters solved the problem.
I used to use spds on MTB but switching back to platforms proved that they screwed up my confidence and I'm happier tackling technical stuff without them.
