  • thanks - so how does the even numbered cog only give you 2 wear patches?

im new to fixed and my regular route has a couple of long shallow hills, the 15 currently kills my thighs - will 17 make enough of a diff?

  • Thinking on you are right the 18t will go on, it's the 19t which needs an extra link when stepping up from 15t.

  • keep the 15

  • It's not just rear cog that affects skid patches.
It depends on what you are funning up front.
And whether you are an ambidextrous skidder.

This little gem has all the answers:
    http://software.bareknucklebrigade.com/rabbit.applet.html

  • check / google "rabbit gear" and all your skid patch worries will be over. Just checked it and it's 3 skiddy holes not 2 for the 18t with the 48t up front(aren't I just a fountain of almost truths today)
The no. of skid patches comes from how the front to back cog teeth ratio can be simplified, so by putting a cog with a prime number of teeth on you will be getting that number of skid patches (i a nutshell)

  • interesting - not sure i understand exactly what skid patches are, but ill go research

will put the 15 back on Cuppa T, when my legs are like iron :)

  • or just use that link.

  • it's not the legs you have to worry about, it's your lungs trying to remove themselves from you rib cage via you mouth that will get ya.

  • 2008 was absolutely brilliant.

the 2009 looks awful. once you've had matte...

least it's not as bad as the Fuji 2007 one, that was awful, especially the red, blue, etc. one.

    the 2009 isn't that bad at all, not as nice as the 08 one but it's not ugly thought;

  • Go for the 19t option, and i would get a surly cog, Cavendish have a big stock of Surly and Miche in all sorts of sizes

  • Yeah the frame is great. But mostly the bars, stem, headset and tyres are where it suffers.

So I'm replacing them. That said, I've hammered it around London since I got here a year ago so it's probably done 4000 miles and I'll I've done was replace the back tyre so far. Antijinx!!

    Peace

  • I went from 16t to 18t and had to remove a couple of links, feels tighter than a nuns pair of tights now. Dura Ace lockring is bulletproof too.

  • My mate want's to get one, but want's to ride ss to start with, do they have a hub that will take a freewheel?

  • My mate want's to get one, but want's to ride ss to start with, do they have a hub that will take a freewheel?

    yes. its flipflop

  • Sweet, cheers Pete.

  • Surely if you go up in sprocket size you need to lengthen the chain, not remove links??

  • FWIW I got a Surly 18t from someone here and simply swapped the wheel around as my Fuji came fixed/fixed so the 15t now sits on the other side. Didn't need to alter the chain at all, it fitted fine with the axle right up to the back of the drop-outs. As for skid patches it depends on whether or not you plan to be doing loads. I was a fixed virgin and have been enjoying getting used to simply riding fixed, so far I really haven't found a need for skidding (and haven't done any intentionally, just a chirp from the tire once when braking quickly) beyond trying to impress your mates.

    HTH :)

  • yes. its flipflop

Mine is fixed/fixed bought online from biddle bikes '08 model...

  • mine is a 2008 US version... hmmmmmm

  • the biddle 08 I bought is fixed/free

  • hmmm - whats the diff between fixed fixed and flip flop - i notice that the other side of the fuji hub has 2 different thread diameters - like this pic:
    http://www.halorims.com/HaloNew/products/hubs/track/track-r-black-full.jpg
(not a halo hub, just looks the same)
is that fix fix or flip flop?

  • ^Curiouser and curiouser said Alice...

  • My mate want's to get one, but want's to ride ss to start with, do they have a hub that will take a freewheel?

best to go fixed, if he like it after getting used to it, he save money, if he doesn't, just buy a freewheel hubs.

cheaper that way if you buy a freewheel hubs and then go fixed, that'd be a bit of a waste of money when you only use the freewheel for a short while.

  • Gotta say it is a cracking bike for the cash. Some people knock it but I have to agree with scaryeire the frame is great. It obviously helps if it fits well, but mine was spot on.
Yes original tyres are a bit poor, the wheels will probably want sorting after a ride or two so get to know someone handy a twiddling nipples.
Pimp my fuji - Pedals and toeclips to shiny track pedals and clips. Fuji drop bars swapped for the same profile pursuit bars above (them be super doody and great for ragging it up hills as they are pretty long) Stock stem to a 3T stem (same length just more angle so I can get lower on the pursuit bars, stem now runs parallel with top tube (ie flat). 17t miche / 19t EAI (to give me a few choices depending on hills) Oh yeah and a front brake + crosstop lever.
Considering - new wheels as the hubs aren't running like butter anymore, more like butter with bits of toast in.
What's with all the seat bashing too, I quite like my little fuji saddle, have completed 30/40M rides without a hint of numb bollies.

  • it would be great if Fuji sell the frame on it's own for £100 included the headset, bb and seatpost, imaging how much better would that be and a greater control of what compound you'd want to put on the bike.
