So far the death tolls of the Russian who die during the 2nd world war is 23,100,000
Solider death: 10,700,000
Civilian death: 11,400,000No surprise on the civilian death really, especially the Gulag, the road of bones, etc.

Anyway, I don't know what all you inept financiers are blubbing for.
You should have taken leaf out of my book and invested in Zimbabwean Dollars.
My original $100 is now worth $350,000,000,0000. -

It did bring us Gin though, which could be said to be a good thing. Herbs and spices from around the world. An empire in a glass.

just seen AIG has just been saved from the slaughter, according to the beeb "Authorities are hoping the bail-out will avert the threat of a global financial meltdown.", but if meltdown is anything like it is in the simpsons it sounds kinda fun.
This is exactly what I was talking about earlier in this thread, I had however hoped that not bailing out Lehmann Bros signalled the end of this protectionist policy. That was a bit foolish I guess, all it took was for another entrenched financial organisation to almost bite the dust. Banks are one thing, but insurance providers going bust? More so the world's largest. Imagine everyone under policy with AIG suffering. 12 million in the UK alone.
I wonder who's decision it was to bail out AIG but not Lehmann? Understandable but still a mahoosive decision. I wanna weild that kind of power, id use it for good. programmes like new bike day.

OK, Pajamas was right, I couldn't help coming back for a peek.
I've noticed that:
1) People have accused me of donating to charity so I can feel better about myself, or to earn the love and respect of you lot
2) People have accused me of naivety as to how risk should be managed
3) People have told other people to be civil and not turn this into a cg666-attackRegarding issue #1: I didn't feel badly about myself to begin with, so why would I need to try and feel better?
Thanks to Gabes who posted a PM that I sent rather than responding directly to me, everybody now knows I'm in the 40% tax bracket. Given that the median yearly wage in the UK is about £25k, that means I pay more in taxes than a significant portion of the population earns in salary. These taxes fund the NHS, dole, schools, etc -- none of which I have ever used. The way I see it, I have given more than I have taken.
Regarding issue #3: thanks. As Horatio said, I can handle it. I'm sure he wouldn't have called me silly if he'd thought it would shatter my self-esteem.
Regarding issue #2:
I have loads to say on this subject, perhaps I'll expouse my sentiments if I ever make it to any of the drinks, and if you lot haven't decided I'm too much of a "morally void idiot" to associate with. -

i think you need to enlighten up, personally. and i think it's also about time people who work in high finance had to defend their conduct. fuck me, i work in the public sector and have been listening to cocks mouth off about 'public sector wastage' vs 'private efficiency', and 'competition is inherently good' for years: step forward digby jones, lord chief of all the cocks, chair of the CBI for some time; bemoaning the lack of literacy in school leavers. well, if i wasn't so busy responding to morally bogus requests to teach the young about 'enterprise' and the 'world of work', maybe i'd be able to teach them to spell their names instead.
so anyway, my point is, well done for defending yourself. personally, i find some of your arguments in this thread problematic, and they seem to stem from a defensive need to justify what you do. it's not nice being attacked by people, so you have a degree of sympathy.

+1 on that - I've had the DVD for a couple of years and make sure I lend it to as many people as I can.
I made the mistake of watching that and 'An Inconvenient Truth' on the same day and nearly stuck my head in the oven...
the corporation is one of the most boring films i've seen.
michael moore films and al gore's hymn to mother earth both serve the same purpose: making people feel like the problem lies elsewhere, and that by somehow watching the film they've made a difference; they come out of the cinema, spouting platitudes, in a facismile of dissent, get back in the car, go home, before voting for the very people who are intent on destroying the mechanisms for life on this planet, killing the poor and waging war.

"2) People have accused me of naivety as to how risk should be managed
there is no discourse without an opinion.
i would be happy to be proved wrong, right or half right in arguing against your sentiments in person or on the forum.
and nobody said putting forward an opinion requires a set of moral values approved by the majority but if you wish to state an opinion you have to be prepared to either be wrong or for people to disagree with you.i still think your grasp of the management of financial risks is lacking, i haven't seen any evidence to change my mind on that. I'm happy to be proved otherwise.

Sprouting Platitudes - is that like a wild Broccoli?
That may be the case for many but it's a DVD i pass to people quicker than say Anchorman or Crystal Voyager. and a movie i walked away thinking about. MM and gore do it for their social status (like cg and her charity work ;)
Can't stand their mindless shite. this is boring but the topic is!? the points are well put across and its an interesting view on how we allow these fucks to operate. What can i do about it??? fuck all to be fair. but my disgust at the bad conduct might convince another.. then another. my voting counts for FA. same cunts control and we pick a puppet.
It aligns with my views and its a way for me to share views that i can't articulate (i have leant the DVD to lawers and business men and its brought great debate)
When the chance arises for me to do more i will take it, advocate it movies like these add to ground swell and keep reminding me of these topics before i get distracted by shimming my saddle, flaming newb posts and watching funny You Tube clips..Know any good forums for social reform?
Gabes - was spelling it phonetically for those whos english aint good

If the state's income came from taxes, but these were a voluntary donation, how many self-satisfied high earners would be donating 40%?
I don't think an automatic deduction of income for the good of society grants you philanthropist status.
