  • "Fuck that DA tool, the chain on mine broke like fuck (not that I even bother with that shit at this point). Just buy the spanner and rotafix on and off, way easier."

Can you really rotafix a cog off? Has anyone done this? I tried this but could not get enough force. Also it mangled the paint around my BB.

  • i need just a lockring tool, not the chin whip, beacusei broke mine, is there a decent one that adjusts to do both bbs and back wheels?

  • vegandontneedgears - buy a Hozan lockring tool. Works on both BB and lockrings. Worth the money. Had one for five years, used heavily, not broken yet.

Hubjub and others carry them. A wee bit pricey here. If you want to get really flash then the Hozan lockring pliers are the jam.

  • I rotafixed my cog off no problem. It also did a lovely job getting the paint off my BB shel

  • If you wrap a bandana or something (cardboard, other rag, whatever) around the BB shell under the chain then it will keep the paint intact.

  • don't do what i did and fit a cog without grease

I broke that fancy schmacy spanner from hubjub in about five minutes

and finally had to cut the fucker off with a dremmel

  • Momentum If you wrap a bandana or something (cardboard, other rag, whatever) around the BB shell under the chain then it will keep the paint intact.

    I tried that and all....:(

  • old inner tube in my favourate, mbt is best nice and wide.Never had any probs with that

  • Not exactly resonable but looks the DBs.

J.A. Stein co - un fixie wrench. $75 from 'the bike biz'

  • ha,i was about to post "use the search button" knowing i started a similar thread. Then i opened it and saw me as the starter
    looks quite a tool

  • I was really close to ordering one, but could'nt justify the expense ($75 + delivery to Norway from US, + Norwegian VAT at 22,5% + customs charge at ~£10 = 60 - 70 GBP). Ordered the Dura ace jobbie from hubjub instead.

  • Anyone know where i can pick up a Shimano TL-SR20, anyone seen them knocking about in Brixton Cycles or A.N other could you let me know. finding it tough to get hold of them!

  • Get in! Got one.

Ok i have found one but need a nice forumonger - Anyone live near Brixton Cycles.. and happy to do a favour.....I'll sort you out the cash and beers, and i'll throw in a free ride on Hippy!

  • Is that expensive tool not just a sheet of steel with socket cap screws in it? Surely you could just buy a couple of these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Shimano-TL-FC32-Bottom-Bracket-Tool_W0QQitemZ130257099315QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item130257099315&_trkparms=72%3A12|39%3A1|66%3A2|65%3A12|240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

then drill some holes, tap them and screw in some bolts?

  • Hey I'm bumping this thread bc I *think *I need a 1/8" chain whip.

I used the rotafix method - but I've been out for another test-ride and there's slippage.

Is a chain whip going to do anything that the rotafix method won't do?

or should I save my money and try the rotafix method again...but harder...and maybe with some blue locktight to help?

  • Yeah I thought about that one from looking at the above posts...

.... the real Q is will the chain whip actualy do anything that the rotafix method can't?

Also I've got a 3/32 chain whip so don't want another / spend any money.

  • You are trying to tighten the cog, right? From experience, unless you are really cautious with rotafix, chainwhip won t be more effcient than rotafix.

Have you tried tightening, riding a few hundred yards pushing hard on the pedals (without skidding at all), and then tighten the lockring again? Also, a cheap lockring will actually not do its job if its shoulder is too small, which will translate into slippage when you start spinning after a skid.

  • Cheers for that jlinln - thats kinda what I thought - surly the rotafix gives you more leverage than a chain whip.

On the cheap lock ring front I've got a formular and a shinny chromo BLB one. I'm using the BLB one bc its fatter - so fat infact there is still a bit of thread hanging over.

If anyone has any experience of BLB lock rings pls shout.

I'm thinking I just need to give it another good seeing to.

EDIT: yes the cog is what I want to tighten, I have a lock ring tool.

  • I have quite a bit of overhang with my lockring. In fact a totally needed a chain whip to get the cog on as tight as poss to give the lock ring just that extra half turn to hold. I have spacers on my hub to get the correct chainline, but it does mean that good ole lock ring is seriously hanging on there! That said, i haven't had any probs since 3months or so, so seems good!
Thought i'd just get my two pence worth in there ;)

  • No more ideas - last time it happened to me, the threads of my hub were actually damaged, leaving a bit of play between the cog and the lockring. Ended up changing the hub; hope it is not your case, it is very frustrating.

  • I never try to tighten my sprocket totally using my chainwhip. I just ride up a resonably long hill, then tighten down the lockring. If this doesnt work then its time to examine your hub threads. As an extra help I'm quite generous with some park tools anti-sieze, which should help things tighten without cross-threading.

  • maybe try starting over, take everything off, lightly grease it all, rotafix the fuck out of the cog, tighten up the lockring to fuck, ride up muswell hill, tighten lockring again.

  • Thanks for all the tips.

Just to give some closure to my bump, my lockring got suck (prob bc I didnt greese the threads)... gutted... so I UTFS, tried everything and got no where.

Went for a ride to cool off. Took a detour via BLB. The mech in BLB said "there are some spanners outside take the wheel off and I'll have a look". He got out the shimano chain whip, sorted it out + regrease... and didn't charge me!

All in all really happy, yet another positive BLB experience... without wanting to jinx myself I've almost always had really positve experiences there.

Also I'm going to get the shim chain whip/lock ring combo when I've got some cash. FYI Condor have a chain whip thats almost identical but without the lockring bit for less than £20.
