you're gamer than i would be, suprised you didn't get mugged or knifed

  • Hi I wasn't there when the accident happened. I knew of it as I live 2 mins away, but didn't want to go and see. My 2 friends witnessed the accident. The lady was coming out of Madras Place. She was waiting there until she thought it was safe to go. The cement truck driver was at the lights. As the lights changed the lady went not realizing she shouldn't off. The truck driver did not see her because he was too high up and before you knew it she was under the truck and ended up on the other side of the road outside the bike shop. My friends run to her to help. But there was nothing they could do. The outcome was awfull. Don't want to go into details, but you can imagine. She died basically straight away. She looked around 50/60 years old. All I can say is my heart bleeds for her, the truck driver and her family. May God help them all through this terrible time. May God bless her soul R.I.P

  • That is the cycle path that crosses Holloway road:
    http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2250052
    Tragic.

  • i don't understand, as basically there is a 20-30m of painted section that area that is designated as bike way. there would be plenty of room?!?

  • I got there just as the police where covering most of the remains of the person. It was awful & shocking.

I'm sure that the timing/delay of the lights doesn't help anything as when approaching in the cycle lane you can have a green light for cyclists but often there is still traffic 'left over' from the previous green light for cars. So you can have a green light for cyclist that leads into moving traffic instead of a clear cycleway to cross the road. Not good.

  • What a shame. I'm not sure where the blame lies. Delays in lights? The lady rushing across?
It doesn't sound like it was the drivers fault.
Like Dogs says, there's quite a bit of room.
How did the driver not see her?

Whatever the situation. It's a good reminder of dangerous roads, jumping lights, etc.

    Horrible news.

  • This is the person that died

It is very sad. And it is even more sad that these deaths are not being reported in the news.

Theres nothing like government self promotion to make out that they care for the cleanliness of our air and our health and recommending we all go green. They sweep under the carpet the mass of deaths happening to bikers because on the streets - the tax-paying car is King.

It's all about the money. You can buy a BMW built like a tank if you have the money. You can't buy a bike like that. The council should have implemented safety for these dead riders.

    R.I.P. nice lady.

  • I am not sure how this could have happened.
If it is the junction I am thinking of then , heading North, coming from the left, it is cyclists only. I jump these lights routinely most nights and the only danger is looking to the right for vehicles coming out of the turning. However, even if they do come out and turn right, they will not enter the buslane where I usually am, so it is pretty safe. Unless of course she was turning right into Fieldway Cresent.

If thats the case then someone must have jumped a light, unless she was cycling very slowly and turned right in front of the lorry as it was pulling out on amber to turn left?

Whatever happened it is very tragic either way

  • saw the aftermath of a motorcycle accident today on holloway road, around 9:30am - looked like an industrial lorry had swung a left into a building site (the one opposite Holloway Cycles) taking out the rider who was in the bus lane. It was a dark blue yamaha, looked like an xj600. anyone got any details?

  • How serious? Sounds like a motorbike in bus lane mash.

  • charlie, it could as easily have been a cyclist.

    Hope the rider is ok.

  • How serious? Sounds like a motorbike in bus lane mash.

what's a 'motorbike in bus lane mash' ?

don't know if it was serious, there were about 2 ambulances and about 6 coppers directing traffic.

  • From January this year motorbikes have been legally allowed to use bus lanes on the Mayor's roads (red routes). The motorcycle people claim it will make the roads safer.

  • charlie, surely concerns over safety in bus lanes stems from fears that motorcyclists traveling at the speeds that the emptiness of the bus lanes afford may imperil cyclists. If this motorcyclist was hit by a left turning vehicle cutting across the bus lane, the danger that he faced and realised was the same for cyclists using bus lanes every day?

  • I have witnessed some real arsehole behaviour by mopeds on my daily commute down Holloway Road. One incident involved this donkey undertaking me at 30mph in the bus lane just as I was pulling in to let other bikes get past! I was not against bikes using the bus lanes initally, but I am slowly starting to revise my thoughts. I do not feel comfortable with bikes flying past inches from my right at 30mph, let alone my left! I think it will end in tears very soon, unless they reduce the speed limit to 20mph accross all bus lanes. That way bikes and motorcycles will be travelling at the same speeds

  • Motorbikers have been almost as vulnerable to HGVs as cyclists are. Letting them into some bus lanes may make them feel safer while they remain vulnerable to the left turn crash.
The LCC is monitoring cyclists' reactions to more motorbikes in bus lanes. Let us know of any incidents or what you think http://www.lcc.org.uk/index.asp?PageID=1250 We only have till the end of June to get the information needed to write a formal comment about the bus lane trial.

  • Gosh ... bus lanes or not, thoughts go out to anyone involved really.

  • Some latest news on this:

"A 64-year-old woman was crushed by a defective cement mixer travelling from the Olympic site in north London, a court has been told."

"Driver Lucian Damacus knew a front mirror, which enabled him to see directly in front of the vehicle, was missing and had no idea Ms Pontecorvo was in the road as he drove over her, the court heard."

"Judge Henry Blacksell QC said Parliament was trying to legislate against accidents. He said the death of 64-year-old Lucy Pontecorvo happened while she was breaking the Highway Code by dodging traffic in Holloway Road, and questioned whether driver Lucian Damacus can be held responsible."

"Damacus, who was described as shaking and shocked by police who arrived at the scene, was cleared of causing death by dangerous driving by the jury."

    RIP Lucy Pontecorvo

  • dodging traffic is against the highway code?????

  • From what I remember at the time.
What happened was she pushed her bike across the road, directly in front of a stationary lorry. Who unfortunately, happened to start moving as she was right in front of it. He obvioulsy didn't see her

  • "Driver Lucian Damacus knew a front mirror, which enabled him to see directly in front of the vehicle, was missing".

Sounds like another avoidable death. Unintentional, but avoidable.

  • I'm sure a good flaming will commence, but I sometimes worry that I'll be reading a thread like this one day that says something about a cyclist death attributed to brakeless.
