  • I like the sushi from the japan centre (takeaway). Its really good value.
And abeno is indeed good for okonmiyaki. The Japanese restaurant on Kingly St and the one at Mornington Crescent are both really good too

  • All this talk of sushi has inspired me to get... Vietnamese pho. Don't ask me how that's relevant.

  • oooh...Pho...where? Can't find any Vietnamese food in this city

No way! You must not be an East Ender then. There are loads of cheapo Vietnamese places at the bottom of Kingsland Rd.

I like the pho at Song Que... about £5 for a big-ass bowl of noodles with all the trimmings:

And the non-pho Vietnamese dishes at Viet Grill (e.g. the Vietnamese pizza, the signature torture beef dish):

For somewhere more central, there's Pho Cafe (one near in Clerkenwell, one near Tottenham Ct Rd):

"Sarf" west - where there is considerably less culinary diversity but oddly enough I can get good Mexican.

Off to the Pho cafe tomorrow for lunch then, assuming I don't get distracted by the okonomiyaki on the way....

    Thanks!

  • Ginnan on Roseberry Avenue

best sushi I've had in London,

lunch box prepared in front of you - £6 and it had blisteringly fresh cuttlefish and mackerel in there

That place ain't shit big daddy. You need to get your arse down Tesco's sandwich section. They've got some of that sushi shit in corner of the fridge.

    Good Mexican??? Where where where?

  • Delivery only though... www.mexifresh.co.uk

I do have a wicked Carnitas recipe that I can share...Teenslain can vouch for it....

  • Vietnamese - Little Hanoi on Curtain Rd

Ring up the Chef; Fai and tell him what you like/want and he knocks up a load of stuff for you. I've never even seen the menu, just turn up and he brings out loads of dishes. I've had a few lock ins with him and mates, he brings out loads of whiskey and Cubans.....ACE!

A bit too far out of my way unfortunately :-(

But I'll take that carnitas recipe, if you please...
Funny I have to come all the way to London to ask for a Mexican recipe, considering that my aunt owns a Tex-Mex restaurant in San Diego...

  • Sudo-American - Macdonald's Kings cross, and other areas.

Macdonald's do the best big macs and extra value meals. Watch out for the crazy guy who does fake heart attacks though in the Kings cross branch.

  • Best one is Noodle Foodle in Wimbledon on Merton Road near South Wimbledon tube, the funny thing the place look generic, just a standard little japanese restaurant trying to break in London.

  • No offence to the Brits out there but when it comes to recommendations on Asian (or Oriental as you would call it) food, even your professional restaurant critics can be way off the mark.

Nah since the girlfriend's an expert on Sushi (and she's from Peru as well), I can safety says that I have a good idea of which's which the best (so far).

  • I like the sushi from the japan centre (takeaway). Its really good value.

Yup downstairs is great, funny how much more expensive is next door for the same thing.

Don't forget Maki Yaki. Man I miss that place...some "999" rolls would hit the spot about now....

  • Oh yes, Makiyaki, I walked past that place so many time (I live a minutes away from Polka Theatre), but was unsure how good it is as it smelled fishy (not in a good way), assuming the fish may not be that good.

but I'll give it a try soon.

  • The best Sushi/Japanese place in London is Sakura on Hanover Street imo
Ace food and always full of Japanese people. Has all the usuals, live fish in tanks when you walk in, hustle and bustle of chefs on the left preparing...
Even has Japanese TV on the box!

If anyone ever ventures south Tsunami in Clapham is LUSH too - head chef is some matey who used to work with Nobu in the first Park Lane restaurant

The place round the corner underneath the JAL building was on par with that place and much cheaper. Last time I went they were closed for refurbishment though, that was a couple months ago - just reminded me to go back and check it out. Hopefully they haven't raised prices!

Apparently the rastaurant was subsidised by JAL for all of the Japanese Tourists in London. They used to arrive by the busload to eat there.

  • Okonomiyaki: Abeno on Museum St. It's frickin' awesome.
Sushi: Sushi-Say in Willesden. It's where the chefs from Nobu go on their day off. And is just awe-droppingly incredible. The couple that run it are lovely, too.

  • Aroogah's carnitas recipe is incredible, you need half a day to make it but boy it's worth it! :p

  • This Ginnan place looks the shizz, good reviews. I'm gonna check it out.

  • big daddy wayne - can you confirm where you are from? (what are your sushi/sashimi credentials).

No offence to the Brits out there but when it comes to recommendations on Asian (or Oriental as you would call it) food, even your professional restaurant critics can be way off the mark.

I am always hankering for good (reasonably priced) sashimi and struggle in the UK. although akari on the cnr of Essex & Canonbury in Islington is decent - and prob my fav London japanese eatery.

Agreed....I've even met people making home-made sushi with fish from the counter at Sainsburys! a sure way to maggot-brain!

Your best bet is to go to Oriental city in Colindale and buy your own sashimi grade fish from the specialist supplier there and rolling it up at home.....it's the real thing and although the per kilo prices look crazy it's a much better deal for your raw fish cravings than any London restaurant.....they have all the standards there, plus flying fish roe, surf clams, toro, etc....

last I heard Oriental city was under threat from the developers, someone please tell me this hasn't happened!!!

  • oh dear, the first line of the wikipedia article reads: "Oriental City was a shopping centre"

but there's hope: Oriental City Supermarket will be reopening later in June at a new location near Whiteley's in Queensway, Bayswater........not been there yet so whether the sashimi fish counter is still there I don't know.

I over heard some people once going on how they were going to open a place selling sushi that didn't get the fact that sashimi isn't just "raw fish". They were very serious about this plan to. I hope they didn't succeed

  • what is Sashimi then? enlighten me

  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sashimi wiki can do that better than me
