bike shops do not have to lend their tools to you, depending on the shop a damaged tool may come out of the mechanics pay. Do I trust most people out there with my Park Bros £30 chain breaking tool?? HELL NO
No offence, but I did a check point for an alley cat a few years back where you had to break and then fix your chain before going on... this was a courier only alley cat. I had brought an extra length of chain just incase and 2 tools.
I was shocked by how many working couriers (who should in my opinion be able to do most basic repairs themselves because its related to their job) could not do this.
More than a few had to have a quick word about it with me, as they were nervous of wrecking their chain. One actually broke my tool. (not the park one)
True story.
Don't give the bike shop greif or call them bad names if they don't let you use their tools. I admit to having been denied tools when in need as well and it is annoying.. VERY ANNOYING but the reality is that mechanic has no reason to believe that you know anything about the proper use of the tool.
