Nice one pkmpirat, do you know of any decent pubs in the area suitable for a few people with bikes?
MA3K, was looking to depart from Greenwich Park at 10am.

I was musing on this very thing today - there are some great pubs there but not all have outdoor space - I will have a think for the best one with space for bikes etc. and if it looks like there will be lots of us I could forewarn them...
If the weather's good though (and let's hope it is!) there are a couple of really nice public gardens that could make good ad hoc pubs. -

That was my kind of assumption when I did a mini recce a while back. Mind you, searching for boozers is not easy at 10am on a Sunday morning.
Nice one mate, cheers!

once more I marvel at the complexities a sentence offers to the pedant.

I could have written a lengthy paragraph explaining the complexities of my social life and decline towards an unhappy place as I continue to neglect my none-bike-friends. Alas, I agreed to a few things, whilst in an inhebriated state, and will be unlikely to make this ride unless I manage to either "forget" my prior engagement, or my none-bike-friends are struck down by an over-zealous sociopath on the public transport, that they frequent.
However, I should point out tha without my previous utterance, which I refuse to recind, you would not have been able to retort with such a delicately made statement yourself.

So I was in Canterbury this weekend and visited the pub I have in mind to enquire as to whether they'd be happy to host us. They have a good back garden with a side gate (meaning bikes don't have to go through the pub!) and are pretty happy for us to pitch up there on sunday afternoon 31st. Only main drawback is food - on sundays they only do roasts (and not the cheapest) and utterly refused to allow us to bring our own food in ('It's the brewery's policy etc etc.') So we'd need to feed before hitting the pub. Of course the garden only works if weather's good, and if it is then we could just go to the park anyway with food and drinks from the shop, which would be cheaper.
Opinions? If we are up for the pub I can let them know we'll be there, or we can leave it as provisional. -

As an alcy cyclist I vote the pub.

Ending up at a pub is a pretty foregone conclusion really, so knowing which pub we are going to beforehand is a great idea. Saves on all the messing around, 'lets go here', 'no here', 'how about here' rubbish.

Nice one. Having a pub pre-named that we can roll into is a great idea. Which one is it mate?

Will 42:16 be OK for this or should I be changing?!?
-

experience has taught me - the vegetarian option at a "sunday roast" is never very good.
therefore I vote food from the shop ;) -

Should be Ok, but all depends on what sort of rider you are. There are hills, and there are some steep bits but they're not particulary long, apart from the section after the half way stop.

It's called The Dolphin, 17 St Radigunds St, Canterbury
As I said, I don't recommend we eat there anyway as it's pricey for food, so we can get food first and then hit the garden.

Exactly the gearing I'll be using - I'd find anything smaller too spinny for most of this ride. There will always be hills either way!
