  • i just got a old gt race frame but with vertical dropouts so i have to run my chain very tight (i do have a half link chain). it's 4130 cromoloy steel so in theory i should be able to take it to a custom frame maker and have the dropouts changed for horizontal ones, is that right? has anyone done this and has it worked for them?whats the cost roughly?

  • Contact fixedgearlondon, Ted did some for Tynan very recently I believe.

  • can't remember ted's price but its very good. he can do all the braise-ons and get it powder coated too. plus if you want to change any angles, fork length etc, he can do all that jazz too for extra dollar. who can resist the mustache?

  • my memory says £25 for the basic drop out swap. ... :S

  • but that'll need painting after unless you like the rusty raw metal finish.

  • £25?? nonono

    thats crazy pricesssss

if you want, bmx_fred I can put you in contact with ted from FGL

he normally can turn around a frame in less than a week, at much lower cost than competitors

I think the basic price for dropout swapping is around £75, although it may be more/less due to the conidition and other factors

    PM me if you're interested

  • that's be more like it. yeh. £75. yeh. my bad.

  • typo, i swears. :D

  • Stop causing havoc you bad designer man.

  • just adding to teh post count. :D

  • I'm in the middle of my first build, and what's doing my head in is that I have a heavy old peugeot frame, and a reallllly light resprayedsteel frame I used to have as a hack. But as it's got dead vertical dropouts I'm stuck. Heard talk of replacing dropouts? Anyone got a pointer?

  • edscoble had this done a few weeks back for his girlfriend's xmas bike, I think someone from here did it and it cost him £85. PM him or search for more info.

  • i think superted at fixed gear london can also do it.

  • I think Ted did Ed's rear end. As it were.

Let's start again. I believe that Ted from fixedgearlondon modified the rear dropouts on the bike edscoble bought for his gf.

  • Cheers, i suppose i'll judge the truth of that statement if i get to meet the guy:p

This came up on another thread earlier, their prices seem reasonable

  • Witcomb replaced mine on the GT, sarf london.

  • I'd recommend Witcomb too, he did the work on my BananaCustard bike. API ^^^ do seem to be quite a bit cheaper.
And as much as I respect Barrie, he can be a bit slow in turning work around, in my experience.

  • haha 18 months slow... :)

That was mostly my fault though since I never got back to him.

  • why not have a egocentric rear wheel hub, that way avoiding the wrath of those who take offence to dropouts being changed

    happy new year

  • egocentri? :)

White Industries ENO for the vert. dropout win!

  • yeah I fancy that, been looking at them for a while, it's more the issue of learning to wheelbuild. but I'm sure i can handle it.

  • egocentri? :)

White Industries ENO for the vert. dropout win!

    yep egocentric ,,, i know what i wrote :-)

congratulations on 20,000 by the way.

  • I'm coming back to this, anyone know the possibilities when the frame's got funny drop outs which are cut out like this http://www.bikesportmichigan.com/reviews/blade05/lg/bladedropout.JPG
obv remember mine are normal vert drop outs.

  • having found a few videos, that's an embarrassingly stupid question.
