bikes are a bitch to insure, house and contents doesn't cover automatically, you need to pay a premium. if anyone knows better let me know.
It really all comes down to who is insuring and what their standard policy wording is like. A lot of companies will include things like "sports equipment" but then exclude bikes or only cover them for theft from the home/ theft during daylight hours, minimum security rated locks etc.
It's a hassle and you need to shop around when you're getting the policy in the first place. Ask specific questions, get specific answers, in writing, with clausal references. Such an utter hassle but ultimately worth it against the anguish of having a bike nicked and not being able to replace it.
