  • I think with many of the general public the distance is not the thing they consider when discussing their commute. The measure they concentrate on is how long it takes.

    If you ask how long is your journey to work invariably they will give the duration, not the physical length.

    My suggestion would be to consider the speed an average person can go without breaking into a serious sweat and then consider how far they could go in 30 or 45 minutes.

    My journey time from work has nearly halved from just under an hour to just over 30 minutes since giving up public transport and using a bike (though a shower at the other end is obligatory). I think its about 8 or 9 miles each way.
