I have found that a massive ego improves fitness greatly. Under no circumstances should anyone pass you.

Basically there are a lot of good ideas in the above posts, its really about what you do when and how much. Build a big base with low intensity riding first then start putting in long intervals to build up the endurance, and then to throw in a few shorter sessions to start to ''sharpen'' the muscles. Its like a pyramid the bigger the base the higher the peak.
Gym work will help you massively, best to find some one who knows what they're talking about and to evaluate you and sort you out with a programme. essentially you would look to build a b it of muscle, then strenghten what you've got and finally power work to get you going fast.
Good luck with it and feel free to ask me any questions if want any help.

Hi Kids,
Im signed up for a 65 mile Sportive in two weeks time which will be the longest ride i have done on my singlespeed to date. Im a bit jittery about my fitness level, any ideas what i should be doing in the run up?

Is it hilly or flat?
Maybe worth joining one of the Saturday runs of clubs like Dulwich Paragon to find out how long 65 miles are. Find out if you prefer bananas, flapjacks or those gel packs for energy.

Hydrate yourself - drink plenty of water and some juices and do not drink too much alcohol - cramps are nothing pleasurable.
Have fun! :) What ride it is?

ride a 30miler this week and a shorter ride towards the end of the week. the following week eat and sleep well and drink no alcohol but plenty of water, do some short non intensive rides to keep your legs moving, do not do anything really knackering in the days leading up to the ride.
take some rego or similar recovery drink immediately after the ride to avoid sore legs. -

Try and ride 40 miles in one hit this weekend, use some form of energy product as well as water, providng you don't throw up, cycle 25 miles next weekend and use exactly the same energy product then ride the sportive and carry the same energy product and use it. Good luck!

65 miles will seem a long way if you are slogging it alone, if you can ride on a wheel and in a bunch effectively and safely then it will be a lot easier.

Sort of hints and tips to increase fitness and muscle in the off season to make me leaner and quicker in the season. Preferably without a gym.
There must be a thread on here but my search skills aren't up to finding it.
So instead of reinventing the wheel thought I'd ask here.

What season?

Cheers andy but found those threads but they talk alot about track riding and rides. For me its a general increase in muscles mass all over my body as I'd like to be fit enough to actually ride my fixie around london without running out of energy within 15 minutes. We are not talking trying to go as fast just gentle. Thats all.
The gym thing bores me no end and even tried the idea of talking books and music fail. I just can't see a gain I feel like its wasting my time and the aches and pains don't seem to be worth the outcome. Make sense?

Retrain as a hod carrier.
Just lifting weights at the gym will increase muscle mass and not take long.
Ride more. -

Just ride your bike more.

ditch the car.get a bike. adapt. take it everywhere.ride it until it becomes a reflex. ride it until it becomes an extension of your body.then you will find what it is you seek.
