there's always a problem when a subculture starts going mainstream, and people join for different reasons to the originators, who were often mavericks or contrarians (see surfing). those joining can often be the opposite, and so adopt certain conventions of the originators and fetishise them, sometimes in an odd attempt to prove authenticity.

of course not everyone needs to feel part of this scene, more often people just like doing stuff that others are into, and any excuse to get into bike riding (rather than other more lame pursuits) seems great to me. bike riding is a broad church, whatever others may think.

I do like the narcissism and petty hatreds of small differences though - when I was a MTB racer I hated road riders, now I'm a road and track rider with Dulwich Paragon I hate London Dynamo ...

I think there is room for people to talk inain nonsense to one another, its entertaining. Ive asked some stupid arsed questions in this forum and got a beasting for it. And rightly so, but I have seen some people asking good questions, i.e. techy questions or questions on supply of parts, and had an equal roasting for it when all they needed was info. I dont subscribe to the naming of groups (mostly cos i don't understand which groups are which) but some folks like to ridicule before helping out. Thats what makes me cry at night.

I have to say I'm surprised at the lack of actual talk of RIDING on this board. It mostly seems to be arguing about BLB and people calling their new bikes 'FIXIES' and going on about colourschemes!

if you don't like it there's plenty of other forums.

and paradoxically, this 'board' has far more chat about riding than most, the key to it being that most of the longstanding members actually know each other and ride regularly.

in fact, it's much more of a cycling club than a forum, fulfilling a social function too. which explains why members get a bit prickly, defensive, guarded at times, and also share in-jokes and off topic conversations.

talking about bike shops and discussing colourschemes are pretty important topics. lose the attitude and fuck off.

oh- and no-one likes london dynamo, they're like dolph lundgren in rocky 5. steely, uncommunicative, violent, unwelcoming, on drugs.
