  • My bike is slowly coming together. So some pics, and some questions :)

I've been waiting, and final I have some wheels.
Been dealing with Kiwibikes for about... 4 months trying to get some all black wheels, but it never happened. So got some from those guys that sell from the US. DP18's in silver with Silver Formula fixed/free hubset.. £100 or so and arrived quick sharp. (No income tax.. yah...)

    Questions.

On the last picture, it shows where the rear cog needs to go.
if I buy something from here http://www.hubjub.co.uk/eai/eai.htm
Will it just screw on or do I need a lockring?
Its a Formula fixed/free hubset and I want to run it 'free' for now (due to knee surgery recently)

At the front when I sit on the bike and rock back and forward there is a slight bit of movement in the fork. I didn't greese up the fork bearings when I assmebled (something I plan to do soon) - Will this remove that rock? Also, anyone know any good cheap greese to use for this sort of thing? Ebay?

    Ok cheers,
    Rob.

  • hmmm, headset sounds loose.

cog will screw on, no need of lockring, self-tightening.

  • grease - evans, any old grease. i use lithium grease mostly. also i have pedro's special grease.

    what's the frame?

even though it's early days, there are two issues: not a fan of the antlers, and your chain looks really fucking slack.

  • Grease any old grease. A friend of mine swears by stuff with teflon in it. I just say grease and more grease.

    Really like that orange though.

  • nb: with regard to the cogs - you need a freewheel, not a fixed cog.

you might want to get a freewheel remover at the same time.

  • Yes you need a locking.

not for freewheel, he wants to run free. i think he thinks the hub is where the mechanism is, but i might be wrong.

  • Another Q.

If I am using a chainring from a Compagnolo Strada, will it be 1/8" or 3/32"

    Cheers :)

  • probably/almost certainly 3/32 but you can run a 1/8 chain on it anyway.

or put a 3/32 sprocket on the back instead. i wouldn't bother.

  • Yeah I mis read then edited when I saw your reply pj.

  • Right ok. Wanting to be running free, but recognise the freewhile comes on the sprocket... :)
No lockring, thats the answer I needed though. Cheers guys.

The frame is a skanky old Dave Marsh I got of ebay, blasted and painted at Armourtex a few months ago.

Roger the loose headset, maybe I didn't tighten it up proper due to not having any greese in.

Greese, greese and more greese... Will pop out and get some soon.
Cheers for the answers guys, always speedy with those replies.

    Tar,
    Rob.

  • Lithium grease all the way for me too - 95p on ebay

  • Argh. Anyone got a 130 spaced track wheel, or 120 with loose ball bearings?

  • What headset is that? Looks purty.

  • Ooo, I like that. :)

  • Campag headset, came with the bike that I got for 50 GN.

Yeah I though it looked like an old campag. That bike is going to look very noice when finished.

  • Cheers fella.

  • Argh. Anyone got a 130 spaced track wheel, or 120 with loose ball bearings?

can build you one if your struggling to find one?

In terms of the bike, looks sharp. I do love a de-badge!
Dont thinkI could ride it though, light steering on freewheel road bikes freaks me out.

I cant use hoods on most bikes as it feels too choppy.

That stem & bar combo looks immenseley long.

  • If you want to run a freewheel (or a fixed cog) it might also help to get a chain tug (or pair of chain tugs) - as the small adjustment screw in the drop outs on the picture above is not going to help as it is facing the wrong way.

On the last picture, it shows where the rear cog needs to go.

You link takes us to a bunch of fixed cogs and not freewheels.

If you run a fixed cog you will need a lock ring.

If you run a freewheel you will not as you cannot unscrew it by back peddling (it just freewheels).

At the front when I sit on the bike and rock back and forward there is a slight bit of movement in the fork. I didn't greese up the fork bearings when I assmebled (something I plan to do soon) - Will this remove that rock?

Greasing the headset with have no bearing (I write all my own material) on the play in the fork, although it won't cure the play you do need to grease it (and grease it good).

Tighten the headset until there is no play - but not so much as to make the forks stop turning freely.

Also, anyone know any good cheap greese to use for this sort of thing? Ebay?

Any decent brand of grease will do it, I would just walk into any bike shop and pick up whatever they have, it's pretty cheap stuff.

  • Greese, greese and more greese...

    'a', 'a' and again 'a'.

    'Gre*a*se'

This will go on your report.

  • Chaing tug - Any recommendations for my setup?

"That stem & bar combo looks immenseley long." - Yeah, got the stem for free, if its too long, ill but new :)

Cheers for the write up tynan...

  • decathlon for teflon grease. it's pink and really slippy.

Can you get chain tugs for horizontal road drop outs? If so where? I would be interested in this, stop slack chain comments for a start.

  • Nice colour frame! What colour is that? I got mine done at Armourtex, went for RAL 2004 (Pure Orange).

  • the side of the hub shown in the pic is the fixed side. two different threads. one for cog, one for lockring. right and left hand threads respectively... the free side is the other side. one thread only, right hand thread. please dont get it wrong. and yep, buy a free wheel tool too. cheap lithium grease from the garage/halfords willdo for everything. thick as you like and never washes away. ever. clean the headset before you grease it and the grit thats probably in there. dont get the mks tugs from the site you linked costhey are for track ends. which youdont have. bmx ones'll do ya fine. like these or similar....

nice colour by the way. i have two orange bikes, one by Rattlecan and me, and one by Argos cycles.
