Freitag Rex messenger bags are awful, they fall apart in a few months.
-

Poorly made and there is definitely no back padding.
Are shit to use too. -

aw well I'm glad I've asked now... Though I'm convinced there is back padding on the F18 Rex, so maybe you have another model in mind Object?

Wait for a grobag, you will not be disappointed. Get something shit in the meantime.

Thanks for the advice! To be honest, I'm not 100% sure a grobag is for me... All these huge straps at the back look a bit "too much".
This is a picture I found on the forum. It just doesn't look very handy...
Am I wrong? -

Have a look at one in the flash in the mean time use a ruck sac or a old post bag with a stabilising strap added.
-

The two main straps are pretty chunky, but that is a good thing. They spread the load better and offer more cushioning than your usual unpadded Timbuk2 strap, for instance. The bottom right strap you see is the stabilizer strap that stops the bag moving around on your back when riding. Very useful and not at all in way. It is also removeable and forms, with the addition of a further strap, the x straps which basically turn the bag into a rucksack for when carrying really heavy loads.
To be honest though, if it seems too much, do you need it? If you're looking at a PAC then you will be getting the same thing, just not as good, IMO. Every part of the Grobag has been thought out to make it useful for riding and carrying a load, if that's what you need a bag for then you won't regret choosing one.
Also, +1 to what Tommy says, see one in the flesh (cordura?) before you rule it out.

Yes you can, I got heterosexual AIDs, not homosexual AIDs, when (and it is only a matter of time) I get the gay AIDs I will have the full set.

Grobags aren't "too much" if you're actually carrying weight, they perform better than anything else I've tried.
But if you just want your bag for carrying your macbook to the local coffee wifi trendy place then maybe 7 months is a little too long to wait. You may not even have it before everyone gets bored of fixed and moves on to the next big thing.
The F18 is unpadded by the way.

Not the same strain but there are lots of variants. -
• #15
Well 7 months is too long for me, that's for sure. The backpack I have now is killing my back.
I haven't really decided yet. I'm not a messenger, and would need to carry heavy stuff only occasionally. I don't think it's worth the money/time if I'm going to be using it only for my groceries once a week...
Object, I still think we're not talking about the same bag.
In the product description it says:
" 2. Comfortable action padding on back and shoulder strap."
And on the picture there is clearly padding.Of course if the quality is not good I will consider something else. because I will use it everyday and occasionally for some heavy stuff.

But what is the next big thing? Full loaded touring 20" shoppers?
I must know.

250 fucking euros for the F18? Fanz, you must be mental to be considering paying that.
If you need something that quickly go to Brick Lane Bikes and get a tricked out PAC for less than that (unless Caspar is still selling the black PAC ultimates for £160, which is a bargain!).

Yeah thanks Benanza, I know it's expensive that's why I'm asking first.
On that link I thought it looked pretty nice: http://www.kurkku.jp/blog/2007/09/freitag_rex.html
Thanks for the tip on the PACs, I'll look into that but I live in Dublin so I can't go to that shop that easily... -

Thanks for the tip on the PACs, I'll look into that but I live in Dublin so I can't go to that shop that easily...just listen to what everyone here has said - they're right. fuck it if it's padded or not. You want a decent bag - get grobag, wig or pac. If you think the straps are too much...think again. you get what you pay for and you get what you wait for. grobags have a wait for a reason. mass produced bags can be ok, but never as good as custom. anyway, panniers on fixed are the new thing, get those and get one step ahead

I've still......yep still, got a few PAC Ultimates for sale. Brand new, life time guarantee. Black and ready to go now.
£160
They are ace. The best out there really.

^ They're a absolute bargain, get one of those.
I paid £160 for my street large last year....

I have a freitag joe bag, great for walking around with, shit for cycling. the padding is not substantial enough and it slides all over the place, though I see the rex does have an extra strap. my bag kept sliding in front of me when going downhill fast - which I found a little scary.
I got a pac bag from caspar and its in another league. was tempted by the grobag but needed a bag without the wait. I love the pac bag.
for a proper bag it loks like either a pac bg or grobag are about the best options.

Rapsac Did you ever work as a mountain bike tour guide for Nelson in porto heli Greece. Say 6 -7 years ago.
Hi All,
My first post here!
I've been doing some research on bags and decided that my favorite one was the freitag Rex:
http://www.freitag.ch/shop/FREITAG/shop.jsf messenger> F18 Rex
I think they look really cool, the bag has padding at the back, seems to be exactly the size I want and I like the fact that it's made out of used super resistant material.
I've been looking at other alternatives such as Grobags, Wig, PAC, but most seem even more expensive and seem to have HUGE waiting lists and no good enough pictures for me to evaluate them...
So, this bag is still very expensive and I'd be curious to hear if anybody owns one or has seen one and can tell me if it is a good choice?
Thanks!
