Jesus was a cock.
You don't need bronze age mythology and superstition to be nice to people.
Technically, Jesus was around during the Late Iron Age/Early Roman transitional period.
I'll shut up now

Fortunately they weren't granted charitable status as they're insufficiently 'religious' to be eligible for the benefits charitable status gives. As i've typed this a massive thunder storm has started outside my window. Does that mean Tom Cruise is about to burst through the window?
FLYING SPAGHETTI MONSTER!

The mythology predates Jesus's arrival. Christianity is a based on common themes that originate way before the Jews knocked up the Torah (which is an evolution of these themes), the prophet, 'dying' for our 'sins' - coming back from the dead, ascending into heaven, the 3 wise men, the star in the sky and so on, these themes appear in numerous pre-Judeo-Christian religions going back to around the bronze age.

it has been a while since Sunday School though

Tynan you maintain that you do not need mythology and fables to act decently towards others but the point is that in saying Jesus is a cock you are not acting decently towards others. You play dumb and pretend that that this is not hurtful to any one. Sure taking offense is not the same as experiencing physical harm but can you maintain that words cannot be hurtful ? do you really need for me to illustrate to you where insensitivity towards someones religion has caused real deep hurtful offense? All very well to sit atop of that high horse of yours looking down at all us weak & superstitious mortals but your comment caused me offense for one.

It was all written after Jesus's life (if indeed he ever existed).
When Jesus tells the Good Samaritan story he is referring to a past event, an event before Jesus was around.

Jesus was a cock.
Tynan, I have some quiet religious beliefs, but that comment had me really laughing. It reminded me of when the Top Gear team went to the southern states of Yankland and wound up the public, with slogans on their cars, that challenged their small-minded ideals and customs.
I almost wish I could see what would happen if someone made that comment in the southern states of Meerca. Geddit? The people who live there are Meercans.

Who am I not acting decently towards ?
You play dumb and pretend that that this is not hurtful to any one.
Not at all, who do you think I am hurting ?
Sure taking offense is not the same as experiencing physical harm but can you maintain that words cannot be hurtful ?
Words can offend people, I have no problem offending people, racists, bigots, misogynists, religious inerrantists and so on, I do it all the time, not through a concerted effort but by showing them no deference, by expressing my opinions, I have absolutely no problem offending them, but hurt ? I doubt very much I hurt them.
do you really need for me to illustrate to you where insensitivity towards someones religion has caused real deep hurtful offense? All very well to sit atop of that high horse of yours looking down at all us weak & superstitious mortals but your comment caused me offense for one.
Ha ! Wonderful, so quickly to the ad hominem and from the defenders of deference :)
Which part of my comment caused you offence ?

I dont remember Tynan saying he was on that high horse, only you put him there.
"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."
"Think for yourselves and let others enjoy the privilege to do so too."
"If God did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him."
Voltaire (1694 - 1778)

The best episode ever by far, I thought they were seriously going to get killed. :)

I'll let you decide whether you think I have "culture" for my own opinion is inherently subjective and therefore flawed. However, I will state for the record that I have neither an interest in l33t speak, such as the poor grammar displayed in your original sign, nor the inclination to become emboiled in a forum discussion on religion when my own views are already widely known.
Good day to you Sir.

Not relevant today?
thats way dark,
it hurts me a lot to see/hear about elderly people especially getting hurt.
Its going to be stuck in my head for while, although I know thousands of people die cruel deaths every day.Tynans point about being more connected to the nuts & bolts of surviving really hit a nail on the head.
If you have ever been closeley entwined in the basic nuts & bolts of surviving, and depended on smaller but less superficial social groups. The "area" termed "spirituality" or "superstition" by most in places like the UK. Become a lucid viceral dimension of everyday reality. Its hard to describe, but you know it when your there.

The other stalwart of the Christian/Christian apologist.
The poor old persecuted Christian. :(
With them numbering 2.3 billion (a third of humanity) having control of the vast majority of the world's wealth and power, having presidents and prime ministers, chancellors and kings in every corner of the world, being the UKs biggest land owner, America's biggest land real estate owner, it's biggest recipient of tax exemption, of legal exemption and so on ad nauseam.
Even with all this, if you express your views with any kind of honesty these people snap into offended mode so readily. Religion has gorged itself on cultural deference and protection from criticism for hundreds of years, people tip toeing around, not wanting to upset, idiot theological clerics making the most ludicrous metaphysical and moral pontifications.
It is telling that when confronted with any kind epistemological question beyond the trivial, the divine and the apologist react not with counter argument or debate but readily take the line of "you shouldn't be allowed to say that, silence that critic, silence the critic".
The persecution line is another smoke screen to avoid any kind of robust debate.

No one has been hurt, only their feeling when they realise it's all a fucking fable.
tell me, what's the difference, between the Grimms Brother, and the Bible?
-
• #74
Tynan, it is not about deference, it is about common decency and not saying things that can hurt other peoples feelings. You wouldn't dream of making racist comments in a public forum so why do you consider it acceptable to make comments offensive to Christians. The reason I took offence is because my wife is a Christain and I know that that she would be offended by this. You argument is basically I can say what I want because offence is not the same as hurt well try telling that to someone on the receiving end of racial abuse.

I'm sorry, did you just put racist and religion in one group?
Tynan, I want a bunch of those stickers when they're made. Let me know how much they cost, I'll pay.
It's amazing how rarely you see anyone but the driver in those things... Con?
