25.4mm seat post instead?
try the one from the bmx behind see how that fits -

sell it to flickwg :)
see if you can get the tube measured/reamed out, be a shame to do anything else.
do not ride it with 2'' of post in there. -

Not sure what is going on here ?
Is the seat tube knackered.
Seat posts only have to go in an inch or so past the bottom of the top tube, much beyond this point on most modern frames the butting kicks in and the seat tube offers no additional support as the post is not touching the inner walls of the seat tube.
I always pretty ignore the minimum insert mark and use the above rule, the other factor is leverage, if you have 3 foot of post out of the bike and 5 inches in - the leverage will stiff rip your seat cluster apart regardless of post insertion

Yeah, the seat tube is a bit knackered... Not gonna ride with that much post showing, just wondering how much insertion I can get away with, I'll cut off any excess post... I know I should get it fixed properly, just wondering if it'd be OK to ride as it is...

Smaller diameter post, stuff it in and shim out the top inch or so?
-
• #8
Use the current post but get a negative shim ;]

Keep it cheap and beat it up! Perfect ;-)
You should get away with a shorter post and 2 inch insertion.
I always wanted a black stealth beater.

2" insertion is fine, well thats what my girlfriend assures me :(

Hard to say really without seeing the thing in the flesh.
Like I say make sure the post goes at least past the bottom of the top tube, preferably an inch or so.

Thanks folks, think I'm gonna bodge and ride... Or possibly just a bit of riding followed by a swift and well overdue death... ;)

woohoo, flickwg made a phunny!

Go for it Joe. You've pretty much said you don't want to spend more money on what was a cheap frame and it seems you have just enough post in tube to make it safe for riding.
YKIMS
But if you do die can I have your vinyl and the Mercian?

Nice fireplace.
Stealth death bike (with the ovalised seat tube, seen here in transitional/pre-full stealth mode) is well on the way, decided to buy a cheap 26.0mm post, chuck it in and see what happened... Only managed to get it in about two inches before the seat tube said 'Ouch, no more pole big boy!'... I was gonna cut it down anyway, as you can see it's stupid long, and then ride it as is ghetto-style with only two inches of post in the tube... Thoughts? Am I nuts? The thing ain't budging so I figure it'll be safe enough... Or reckon I should do the right thing and get it fixed proper? i.e. Make the seat lug/tube round again, braze and ream out to 26.0mm if necessary... The frame only cost me £75 so I don't wanna chuck any wedge at it... I just wanna ride this sucka!
