  • what brand and range of product to use best?

Any particular preferences, or are all the same in quality, finish...?

  • if it's done properly, is this a properly hard-wearing method?

Whats the best way to strip down already colored rims (Deep V's) to base metal and clear coating?
I want to avoid stracthing or pitting the metal and leave just a shiny finish, then clear coat.

    One word,

    Nitromors.

    1. Put on some gloves and goggles!

    then as follows:

Be very careful, apply small amounts with a paintbrush (the kind you paint a picture with)

The powder should bubble of in a minute, if it doesnt , DONT scrub it, just apply a little more.

When it all seem loose, scrape it all off with a credit card. And wash it down with some water.

Whenever I have stripped anything before in the past, I have found the metal to be damn shiny polished underneath, in which case it might be nice just to clear coat it.

But as they are rims, they will probably be a dull machined kinda finish!

Not really, I have had success with various stuff, Acrylic Autospray seems to work well.

If it is in a non contact point it is quite hard wearing (if done properly).

  • Top job Tynan.

Nitromores + angle grinder and wire brush attachment.

    Basically, what skeletonboy said.

Nitromors it, for god's sake wear some google please !!! an accidental flick of a splash of Nitromors in the eye might well leave you partially sighted if you can't get it washed out in time (seconds not minutes). It will scar the eye very very quickly.

Go slowly and carefully, take your time.

Depending on what you find underneath, I would go at it with increasingly fine sandpapers to get it up to a mirror polish.

    Cheers.

    :O

Nitromors + angle grinder and wire brush attachment = splashes of Nitromors everywhere = pain and skin damage.

  • have you ever stripped a powder coated rim tynan?

I just got a pair of dt swiss rr.1's and they are powder coated a light grey unlike the black one you seems to have had which I presume is anodised?

Id really like some polished rims to go with my hubs, and am considering stripping them. Any idea what I might find inside? Will they just be dull matt finish aluminum or shiny polished surface?

Ive stripped aluminium frames & forks before and they have always been very shiny underneath.

Id otn think I can be bothered to polish my rims if they some out dull though.

  • he is right i left a tin in the sun behind me, whilst i stripped an old iron bed. SUn heated it, popped the lip, splattered my back and within seconds it was burning the fuk outta me. Luckily there was a man with a hose that i ran up to and hi-jacked immediately.

Aye, I had my PPE on. But if you need to strip a frame in a hurry.......

  • Tynan's method is the pro version, lovely job. For less effort and money, use hammerite. It is a primer, colour and top coat all in one. I did my whole bike in it. Much harder wearing than the Halfords sprays I used on my tourer.

plus good for colour matching for later touch ups, where necessary.

plus plus, the 'hammered' finish colours can cover up little dings and scratches that won't buff out

  • and gives it that elusive 'man at B&Q' look!

    What colour are they slag?

  • Gold and tatty Jol, the metal below looks shiny enough to keep without coating

I am not sure whether my RR 1.1 was powdercoated or wetsprayed, but it definitely wasn't anodised - either way you could simply sand it back to the alloy, although that would leave you with some sanding work to get it nice and shiny.

    Ah !!! :s

Lucky you had your back to it ! I got a load of Nitromors on my (bare) foot and managed to get to the bath in under 10 seconds to flood my foot in water, it still left a big scar.

Are they anodised and not painted ?

If they are anodised Nitromos won't be much use to you.

  • I'm gonna give your method a go over the weekend Tynan. i got a scrap bike to test on. my concern is the sandpaper coarseness. which will be a suck it and see.

  • The gold are Anodised... am i looking at shot blasting?

Sandpaper or oven cleaner with sodium hydroxide.

  • my concern is the sandpaper coarseness.

    What does this mean ?

  • Sandpaper or oven cleaner with sodium hydroxide.

Again, sodium hydroxide is a very strong alkaline, so goggle time again!

Also results can be unpredictable, as the alumium can react and turn black.

    Again, good advice.

    Work outdoors with these chemicals.
