  • Hey there! Any help is much appreciated. Question: How hard or easy is it to replace and install a new bottom bracket on my fixed gear? What tools will I need to do this if I do?

    Cheers!

  • two hands are a start.... and a crank-puller i assume, and.. errrr.. beer?

  • crank puller, dependent on cranks, and bb tool, dependent on BB. piece of PISS.

find out what cranks and BB you have. tell us. we tell you what you need.

  • What PJ said. With added brute force though.

  • don't do it.

    go off the peg.

nah, seriously it's a slice of urine.

google sheldon brown and park tools websites. should be plenty of info and step by step guides

  • Listen to the replies posted here, read the Park Tools guide, consult Sheldon... It's really not that hard. Just make sure that you give yourself plenty of time to do the job, and don't start until you're really in the mood.

  • Thanks! I figured it was pretty easy, just a bit of patience is all that is required.

  • takes about 30 mins to swap out.

  • el guapo? That's quite a claim... I hate BBs, they mash my noodles...

  • i love the 3-2-1 joke in the middle with ted thingummy.

    comedy gold.

  • Don't forget to grease / copper ease the new one when it goes in.

  • El Guapo is the name of the villian in the movie "The Three Amigos" I have a face like slapped arse!

  • My condolences, I am similarly afflicted... Tho' my mum still calls me her 'guapito'... Mums, eh? Gotta love 'em...

  • things to bear in mind - any crank puller will do, unless you have TA or Stronglight cranks. Be careful when inserting the crank puller - use grease to make sure it threads properly. Take a look at your bottom bracket. You will need a different tool dependent on the style of cups - shimano requires a special tool whereas older bbs can be gotten off with a hammer and screwdriver or any old lockring spanner.

Don't forget to CLEAN the threads, thouroughly, before REGREASING them and inserting the new BB. Then cover yourself in grease, and roll around on the floor. This helps you relax.

  • consult Sheldon...

    From his grave??

  • From his grave??

He does a séance on Thursdays where he deals specifically with bottom brackets.

  • That would be cool.

  • Good thread on BF here.

if you're lucky. if you're unlucky it requires superhuman strength, a bench vice, a strong will and a good heart.

A good heart, these days, is hard to find.
