  • VB has mentioned plenty of times that those who don't register have to put up with banner advertising. So the ad-free registration is a perk. As ever, I'll try to avoid being exposed to advertising as much as possible. I don't watch TV - that's a good start, and I don't pay attention to street advertising. Obviously it's there subliminally, but having fostered a core belief that rejects positive associations with advertising, and a heightened self-awareness of when my behaviour is being irrationally swayed by marketeers, I feel fairly well protected.

I'm choosing to adopt a more militant position on this issue because it's one of those situations where in my own life experience, I see a lot of wishy-washy sit-on-the-fence arguments being given against marketing/advertising (probably because people feel the wholesale commoditization of society is inevitable and don't want to be outsiders), and I'm not happy about that kind of complacency.

VB has asked for donations in order to maintain a form of independence, and people have been happy to contribute. I can't really speak for him personally, but this seems like a bit of a hobby for him, and people tend to fund their own hobbies up to a point.
