Wheel Building Class

I'm very up for this - I've been thinking about building my own wheels for a while, but have been worried about ending up in a bloody mess surrounded by bent spokes after their first ride. This will be really helpful, thanks to everyone who's offered to help out.

To show my ignorance, what will I need to bring?

• Hubs, and rims obviously
  
• Spokes (any particular kind, size?)
  
• Nipples (any particular kind, size?)
  

See how my ebay sale goes but it might include some powdercoating.

After having a chat with Mr Otters, and PJS last night, I was wondering whether anyone would be interested in a group order for the parts for this. I'm going to try and see whether I can get someone to give us a bit of a discount.

However, we probably need to make up our minds as to what people are wanting - let me know if you have preferences, and I'll see what I can do to sort this out.

I would have been interested, but I just picked up my deep v rim from Cavendish and ordered a hub last night. Haven't got spokes or any rim tape yet though...

i want to either rebuild a knackered old rear wheel, or build from scratch a quality front wheel for my geared road bike. so not sure if a group-buy is applicable

I've ordered two Mavic CXP-33s, but I'm still on the look out for hubs/spokes.

Cavendish have LOADS of nice hubs, but I opted for the Diatech Gran Compe Track hub from Triton Cycles.

I have some PayPal cash burning a hole in my digital pocket, so I was going to go with some Phils from HubJub. Unfortunately they're out of 32 - guess what hole-count I bought my rims in...

See, my problem is, I get paid two days before the wheel build class. Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction of where I might get all my wheel building needs served here in London town on the cheap?

Ring cavendish cycles, they has some phils in the display cabinet. I saw some nice halo track hubs too... never realised they (halo) were into track stuff though?! No idea of rep, but the looked nice.

SJS cycles is very resonable for spokes they have most sizes and stock DT Swiss. The nipples come with the spokes I believe.

Thanks playswellwithotters for organising this, like I said before I can bring a wheel truing jig along and a wheel truing tool if we need it.

Ok ...
I have access to 3 possibly 4 truing stands, if we can get more then that would be great. Or just do two to a stand.
I have a handful of spoke keys, but more would be good.

As for spokes.. if you can workout the sizes you need i can make an order. Try and get the lengths to me by the middle of next week so that i can make sure they are here in time. DT double butteds i could probs do for 40p each.

Bike fix will have some goldtecs in soon, not sure if thy will arrive before the dates though, ill check with trev.

i don't have anything, yet (rims, spokes, hubs) so advice welcomed on all of that, although i will look more into it over the weekend.

OK, Phil HF hubs just won on eBay, Mavic CXP 33 rims coming from Wiggle - I'm nearly ready for class.

RJS, i'd love to take you up on a group buy if you can co-ordinate it.

I'm building cheap, so system ex / formula equivelant hubs (silver) and some mavic cxp33s, if we can get a decent discount. I'll take up Matt's offer on the spokes.

Any suggestions for slightly cheaper rims? I think the cxp22s only come in black and i'm being a snob for the shiny silver finish.

Is anyone else looking to buy similar bits?

oh, and i'm buying for front (100mm) and rear (120mm) - will build one at the workshop and one at home.

I'm in for the group buy on spokes etc - thoroughly confused about lengths at the moment.
