If I was trying to go fast, gears would win. Just reiterating what hippy said, I can corner quicker, start quicker, achieve a higher top speed, maintain a higher top speed, etc. As long as you know how to use a set of brakes (and shifters) properly, it's no less manoeuvrable in traffic either. Can be a bit scarier though.
But I like having a fixed hack bike for the other reasons hippy mentioned. He's so wise and rational and experienced and everything, it's no wonder dogsballs is stalking him in all cycling contexts.
