Except a geared road bike.. or slicked mtb with gears.. or a geared cross bike.. or..
If you have the same rider on two bikes on variable terrain the geared rider will go faster.
Why? Because they can take off faster and still have a higher top speed. And if you are going to make the weight argument then I'd suggest dieting, not driveline removal.
Fixed/SS is more fun in traffic, less to worry about, cheaper, easier to maintain, etc. blah blah but don't think it's faster having less gears.
