ska, timbuk2 bags are decent, hard wearing, waterproof. I'm not sure how they fair price wise now, for a while i found they had got rather expensive for what they are. There are better bags, but if they fit in your budget then cool.
I am in the same situation as andyp -

why are these messenger bags so much money ?!
-
• #211
Keeps the numbers down. Don't want too many people using them.

They're made of very expensive fabrics imported from Jupiter. The off cuts go to make Rapha Jackets.

Not made by kids in factories.

They give you membership to a special clique with special rights. You get ownership of hobo ass for example.

Mine is mink lined, that kinda pushed the price up a bit.

look at a bag from a high st shop labeled "messenger bag" then look at a real messenger bag.
it should be obvious why they cost more. -

They contain special messages.

why are these messenger bags so much money ?!
Not made by kids in factories.
aside from custom ones like archies, and wanky hipster ones like freitag - on what do you base this fact?
The rest are products of the gross commercial garment industry and made exactly the same and any other generic product.
Not suggesting that these products use child labour though, and besides theyd probably be grateful for the job if so.

Even if I hand-made custom messenger bags out of organic textiles and magic, I'd still make sure some rural Chinese peasants were exploited. It's karma.

is catherine newell still going ?, making bags in brixton for the likes of metro labs, got one years ago, no sign of wear, fave bag other than the inside is a black hole !

For once, I'm going to be sensible.
They cost more money because they're extremely well made, well researched and designed to stand up to many years of daily work and abuse. For the most part, they're made in small runs by tiny factories who specialise in what they do. Maybe it's a bit like buying a suit from Saville Row rather than Asda.
The legit messenger bag companies don't use far eastern (ie cheap) labour, either.

Mine is spunk lined, that kinda pushed the price up a bit.
Okay. Won't argue there. Fair do's.

proper messenger bags are really robust (they barely age at all) generally made of heavy cordura and truck tarpaulin
they are designed to carry various loads so are very easily adjustable and do not slip around in use
good ones are filled with useful gadgets/pockets/straps for various purposes
the good ones are not designed for ease of manufacture but their actual use. look at one of scott's or pac's bags, the construction is amazingly complex and they appear to be very over engineered but this is why they last for years.
if you are carrying a lot of stuff on a regular basis spend the money on a goood bag
there pretty reasonably priced though
