  • Good idea BMMF - wouldn't yield the main plusses of a fixie but would still be kinda cool

  • And you get to lose with dignity...

'Ah well you see, I would've been quicker if it wasn't this kerazy one-geared bike!'

  • Heheheehe

    I SO would have, too!

    SS is the (moral) winnner

And you get to lose with dignity...

'Ah well you see, I would've been quicker if it wasn't this kerazy one-geared bike!'

  • I've also heard a theory that fixed tri wouldn't be so good as you can't freewheel and stretch your legs before the run. I've never done a tri though so this might be bollocks.

  • the stretching legs isn't important, it is the change in the gear ratio that is- to develop a more 'running like cadence'

  • The reason I wanted to have a go was because I reckon I would be pretty handy at both the cycling and the swimming legs. This time last year I was swimming a mile a day in my lunch hour in under half an hour as rehabilitation for my dislocated shoulder. Although not having run for about 7 years, I remember that I used to get terrible pains in my shins ( shin splints ? ) and hips afterwards. Still I reckon I am good for a straight 9-10 miles with no training providing I have good trainers or whatever.

I must get that road bike sorted

If you can do 1500m in less than 30mins and having seen you on the rollers , I am guessing you will be pretty quick for 40km on a flatish course then I don't reckon you would need to run the 10km that quick to get a decent time....

  • .

  • Two freewheels? Wow, that IS extreme.

    Where is the second one?

    ha ha! yes, indeed.
    In my head I think!

  • hmmmm. i do indeed have a spare back brake and s/s wheel and hub kicking about. and i really fancy another challenge. shannon ball has just alerted me to some shorter entry fee only races (thanks). suddenly i'm interested again.

i'd blitz the swim i reckon. i swim 3k three or four times a week, did a 5k in 1hr 10 a month ago and am looking to do a 10k soon. i'd probably start to lose serious ground on the (s/s) ride. i'd probably end up walking the last mile of the run with jelly legs and spots in front of my eyes.

only one way to find out though. better sign up.

  • Let me know which race you sign up for - if I'm doing it would be nice to say hello - and clock at your swimming technique.

  • If I did do my tri on a SS set up, what would be a good ratio for a near flat course ? I'm guessing higher than 48:18 ---> 48:16?

  • higher cadence is what to aim for.

  • So stick with the 48:18 and go like blazes!

higher cadence is what to aim for.

  • yup, aim for between 90-100 rpm.
Then last 5 mins should be at a higher cadence.

  • i would like to be a gash swimmer.

note:(not sure if the term translates, but state side its a 'giner)

  • what the term 'gash'?

one of my friends is affectionately called 'gash'. just for fun like

  • On a flat course in 48x18, you're not going to be very fast.

    48x16 on 700x23 @100rpm gives you about 23.6mph - a shade over the hour (1.05ish?) for a 25 miler.

Your lungs will thank you, even if your legs grumble a little bit.

  • ^ better advice.

  • Hey guys,

Fatboyralph and I have already entered the London Triathlon team event on the 10th August. I'm doing the run, FBR the cycle and a mate was going to do the swim leg. Unfortunately, he's probably going to have to pull out, so we may need someone to take his place.

Any swimmers out there interested? We are not too concerned about times, more just having fun and finishing. Although saying that, I think FBR is really quick on the bike.

  • I have managed to crack the hour in a medium gear time-trial (46x17, so about the same as 48x18).

However, it meant averaging 117rpm (actually spinning a bit faster to make up for slowing down at turns/junctions), and was one of the more testing things I've had to go through on a bike. (uncomfortable too!)

  • the team relays are on saturday evening (9th)
Depending on what time I'm doing the triathlon the next day I might be tempted.
At least then I'll know the swim course!

  • i'm doing London (again) this year - sub 2.30 olympic distance race.

As always, it would seem that a bit of knowledge about things is usually worse than no knowledge at all. ;-)

Most of the folks in my tri club are either good runners (<17min 5k) or good cyclists (55min 25mile tt'ers), most of those top cyclists will skin you alive on the bike, many also ride, local tt's, crits and road races. A huge percentage of our club also ride either fixed or SS too.

One club mate even 'cruised' around Windsor Tri on a single speed last year for a laugh and still clocked a total time of 02:18.

The fashion crimes are function rather than fashion statements - a one piece (or two piece if you have the six pack) garment means you don't need to fuck around changing in transition, just swim, ride and run - taking time only to change shoes.

The only time you might stretch on the bike is if you're going long - half or full ironman. If you're doing sprint and olympic distance (40km/20km bike) you'll be going as hard as you can for the full distance.

As a guide to "good average" times for an olympic distance race - around 25mins for the swim 1500m, 01:05 for the bike - 40k and 45min for the run - 10km

The tribar folk you generally see in RP (mtbs with tribars etc) are usually tri newbies - "look at me i'm doing a triathlon and have got the tribars to prove it" - these people are not indicative of the triathlon hardcore.

It's a bit like saying all that the hardcore of Fixedgear/SS all ride london edition langsters.

Most triathletes will be riding a regular road bike, ss or fixedwheel around richmond park - err without tribars.

  • im quick? relative to what? just worked out that i averaged a storming 21.95kph over the weekend! ill time 4 laps of richmond park this week see how i go

from past results looks like 1:15 on the bike puts you in the upper half of the table. can aim to go under that.

  • As a guide to "good average" times for an olympic distance race - around 25mins for the swim 1500m, 01:05 for the bike - 40k and 45min for the run - 10km

Zoinks! I can just about make a sub 50min 10k - that's without all the cycling and swimming before!

I did my first tri last year, a sprint (300m/20k/5k) and did 8:49, 48:34, 26:46 for an overall time of 1:23:56 - coming 153 out of 209. I guess I am old (44), riding a hybrid and I've never been fast (or first) at anything. In the main, I race to beat my own best times. Which is what I'll do in a couple of weeks when I do this race again. That's plenty of motivation for moi.

Next year I'd like to do an Olympic distance, but I can only think about a good time for me.

  • my aim is to go sub 2:30 at the moment.
My first 'triathlon' was an off road event.
750m swim-around 9 minutes. I came in 1 minute behind the guy in front of me.
18k MTB- 50 minutes- of hell- had done 0 training MTB runs so was an idiot- I used to be quite good
5K run- 25 minutes- which I was dissapointed.

came somewhere like 11th or something out of 100. Was definately let down on the bike- 2nd in the swim, 10th in the run and 30th on the bike. Terrible.
