I vote for comfort and happiness, you may need to experiment with your pedal choice to find this.

i don't get why clips and straps are the 'cooler' hipster choice. the reason i don't understand this is that they look absolutely fucking wank.

they look absolutely fucking wank.
?! Don't understand what you're getting at?
Who cares what they look like, it's up to the rider and his/her own preference on what they find comfortable
Now, double Arrospok, that looks absolutely fucking wank!

well, that's my point, why are clips and straps the hipster choice*? they must like the way they look, right?
dogsballs uses them, and he is the barometer of all things hipster.

I switched to clipless the other week and it is a fucking revelation! I spend nearly as much time going out for serious rides as I do commuting/going to the pub etc on my bike so I was willing to sacrifice some practicality for performance.

Doesn't make it hipster though does it? Just preference
Like buying a Brooks saddle to a San Marco Regal?

I've only just started using toeclips and they're not bad really. I've used Look clipless long before, and I swore by those. The toeclips are convenient (even for my wide feet), and the clipless are just efficient. What works, works.

It's not the straps that are hipster.. it's the fact that hipsters can wear their hiphopslaveshoes.

i've been riding clipless on MTB first then last couple of years on fixed and really rate the sidi/atac combination, but I've just put Soma 4gate clips and double single straps on my second bike, I thought it'd be good to have something that will still function but also allow me to use normal shoes if the fancy/need was there. Must say sidi/atac are infinitely better to ride in, feel so much more positive, stiff sole and positive engagment, feel so much more efficient, but they do unclip themselves in certain situations, even in extreme circumstances with new cleats and I've had a couple of hairy moments because of them. The clips straps I found to be more convenient in some situations, but they do feel veryu casual, I wouldn't want to do any serious miles on them. At the moment l reckon appreciate the option of having both. If I had to choose it'd have to be Sidi/Atac...

For anyone with any integrity, the only hip shoes for clips and straps have a massive big plastic cleat nailed into the sole that makes current road cleats seem exceedingly walkable.

yeh I wanna ask, if your cycling for long spells, do your feet get sore as there is not much support for your feet on clipless eg. shimano m540 pedals. i am nearly finished my build of new bike, I always preferred platform pedals for freestyling but on fixed, what is a good pedal for tricks and things naughty.

Not if you have decent cycling shoes with a really stiff sole. Although I have heard of people suffering on egg beaters with some shoes.

I switched to clipless because my manly feat couldn't fit on my womanly MKS pedals. I was getting tingly pains in the half of my foot hanging over the pedal on any ride over 5 or so miles. With clipless I have a nice stiff sole that supports all of the foot (although I was getting tingly feet on the Cambridge ride near the end... I think it was because my feet were swelling and I needed to loosen the shoes).

What like a pair of Vans? Yeah well hipster? Not like most pro BMXers have been wearing them for 30years or anything....*
Now if you mean Bathing Ape, Nike Air Force/Court/Dunk, then I agree.
*sorry, not meaning to get all aggro just find it odd that you're so anti clips/straps

any shoe other than a cleated cycling shoe is a hipster shoe. do you hear me? are you listening to me?
you might as well grow a pencil thin moustache, give up drinking and speak with an antipodean accent

What about these?

that's what Dale was wearing last time i saw him at westie beers.

I've not got on with clips and straps, probably partly due to size 13 feet they just don't seem secure, I'm using SPDs now, but would like to wear my regular shoes for short trips commuting. how do power-grips compare with clips and straps, and could they be the answer to riding in clown size shoes?

Clipless here (m540's also). Works for me. Then I do have a big feet also.

i prefer riding just flats, use to ride spd's but i got dodgy knees which didn't help an them toe straps were to much fuss

i'm gonna have to disagree with this!

good... i think.
had Look Keos on the roadie for a few months until I got fed up with them... The cleats wear out like they're made of swiss cheese or something and they can be a bugger to clip into when the pedal spins round. Swapped 'em for Time RXS in the end.
Double sided SPD on the fixed.
