  • I run an Oddbins and would like to shamelessy annonance the arrival of of some top quality beers that have jus arrived..for those that appriciate this kind of thing..

Two great Beers from the mighty Sierra Nevada

ESB or early spring beer 5 odd per sent and a mouth of hoppy spring like beer

Bigfoot a whooping 9% barley wine beer, their 25 year anniversay beer dense hoppy and fruity.

    Also new today

PUNK Dog from scotland- no added presevatives flavours etc all nataral

first is they're IPA 6% hopppy crisp a little cloudy

Though more fancy the Paradox Speyside a extremely limited edition dark stout that has been aged in Speyside Whiskey barrels, tops out at 10% and at 3.99 yes 3.99 apparantly they'res shed lot of tax per % , one to take some time over.

anyway enough of this lets dicuss favourite beers and Ales in a 'what you listening to' drinking type thread.....

  • That Paradox Speyside sounds interesting, although if I was being a pedant, which would be most unlike me, I'd point out the superfluous 'e' in your Scotch ;)

I wish there was more Porter in the world...

  • |Stand corrected good man. Meantime is a mean porter.

  • As is Fullers London. Had a honey porter in the Wenlock Arms once that was good too (not sickly and perfumed like the St Peters offering).

  • Ah the Wenlock a smelly perfectly formed place in the world, went through the transaction of drinking there during the smoking/non smoking in that place and it didn't come out that well though if you want a fine Ale theres little better.

  • hmm beer...
    st peters ales
    adnams
    mild
    timothy taylor landlord
    old peculier
    grimbergen
    ciney
    petrus
    westmalle dubbel
    brugge beer
    blandford fly
    duval

    to name a few

never liked scottish beer much, they were too tight to use hops.

  • Yeah St peters rule. Loads of great beers through the year Stout to Grapefruit-though man in the box/alpine beer hits the spot and pocket all day long!

  • Guinness? Guinness? Guinness?

  • yeah, Guinness!!

  • i like that irish beer... GUINNESS

  • broon ale all the way!

  • right...set this straight you can get bread made with the broon stuff in yeah? New-kie broon bread..?

  • mmmm...Duvel. had my fix today, very nice. Bit strong for repeat consumption though. Gotta check those out Simpson.

& a pint btl of Guinness there boss; off the shelf thanks.

+1 for the duvel, its not too strong, its just good fun :)

  • +1 to the Wenlock, I'll look out for you in there Scarlett (spelling?)

    As for beers:

    Jennings Cumberland Ale
    Karmeliet Trippel
Jever (thanks for the spelling Skullhead)

    • anything real, nutty, with a dash of hoppy bitterness, in a pub that sells pork scratchings with hairs on.
  • Two great Beers from the mighty Sierra Nevada

Sierra Nevada is indeed a MIGHTY brewer!

What's the chances of getting some Anchor Steam flown in?? I'm talking in kegs

  • The Wenlock's less smelly now since the smoking ban (don't think they could neglect the gents' any longer), but I don't get out to the pub much. I'm quite lucky, as the Wenlock is one of my locals, so is the Jerusalem for St Peters, and the Artillery for Fullers.

However, my favourite midweek evening boozer is none of the above, and I'm not saying where in case it loses its exclusivity...

I heard a rumour the people behind Duvel were right-wing extremists. Nice beer, but if you like that banana edge, you could always try Banana Bread Beer (can't remember the brewer).

I had a pint of that Jennings Cumberland after the national hillclimb once - it's never tasted quite as good since!

    Yes, it's 2 't's, though I'd rather have coffee.

  • Where is this Oddbins you work for?
    The me more about this:
'Two great Beers from the mighty Sierra Nevada'

  • Otter Ale.
Or if you're ever down there, The Bridge at Topsham does the best ploughman's and beer lunches ever. Proper and traditional as well, not to mention the pub still serves archaic drinking hours.
    (their nelson beer is amazing).

  • I'm a Guinness man too, but also like a quality Mexican beer like Modelo, Negra Modelo, Indio etc.
Off to Devon for a long weekend, and there is a micro brewer next to the cottage, £60 for 72 pints!
By all accounts it's a top drawer brew!

  • +1 billion for St Peters

I was diagnosed with coeliac disease nearly 3 years ago and had to switch to a gluten free diet which meant no beer. Ever. You can get gluten free beers but they taste of piss. Apart from the St Peters one which I discovered just before Christmas. I'm now a happy man again.

  • Trippel Karmeleit
    Rochefort 8
    Westmalle Triple
    Duvel

    • any random ones from the nearby Belgian bar that I feel like trying out.

Leffe Blonde (at home, it's the only Belgian brew my nearby supermarket has)

Magners (as above though applied to cider, much prefer the English Bulmers)

Laphroiagh when I spot it and I'm so drunk that I'll actually order whisky to wrap up the night.

Zubrowka vodka + apple juice when I'm with my Polish girl's friends.

Krupnik honey vodka, straight, at home, because I'm an alcoholic.

Any ales and lagers on tap in any other pubs I find myself in that aren't Belgian, save for Fosters and Stella which I no likey, no touchy.

  • Sierra = great beer. West Coast micro breweries are really good, drank some cracking ales when I lived in BC, Canada.
Mr Smith - what no Black Sheep on your list? Also, I'd add Brakespeare (even though no longer at Henley, it's in good hands with the Wychwood Brewery).
I always try and drink a local ale, so Adnams never better than when in E. Anglia, and Harveys good when down in Brighton (North Star or Battle of Trafalgar good ale pubs last time I went) - I'm sure thats psychosomatic tho.

Thanks for the heads up Simpson79, where's this Oddbins you work at? LFGSS tasting session? (How out of hand would that get?!)

  • Tim Taylor Landlord was a favourite of mine at OUR pub.. back in the day.

  • Winter - Ossett Pale Gold or Phoenix Thirsty Moon (if i'm very lucky)
Summer - Lindeboom (If only they did an energy gel)
