  • please do not refer to a bike as art again, or your death will not be pleasant.

Well let me qualify it by saying mechanical art - there is a great deal of artistry that goes into a bike like that, however i do think a bike which is built just to be looked at and not properly ridden is not art as for me the beauty is in the combination of form and function being hammered down the road at full pelt.

I build custom chops and bobbers, and consider them rolling art, however i cant stand to see ridiculous custom builds built for shows and the kings road that need something like Wandsworth roundabout just to do a U Turn, the beauty is in designing and building a sled that looks as good as it rides - that is mechanical art.

Besides if you dont see a nice frame as art (art being the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance) why are you on here, the journey that has lead you to a love of pedaling and the appreciation of all thing fixed must meant that whether you acknowledge it or not there is a part of you that lusts after the fine art of quality frame building.

  • no bike can be art, they can still look good with out being art

    multi quote wont work:(

you missed our unfinished what is art thread (this fourm is really good at staying on topic) I argued that art is something that exists for asetic reasons alone, where as anything that servers a purpose past that would be design, or some thing that is not art.

ergo no bike can be art.

  • And that is why art is in the eye of the beholder . . . anyway here is some more porn

  • That fillet brazing is incredible. I was really curious as to where the seat post clamp is... any ideas?

Casati use a clamp which is basically rotated so that the bolt is in the top tube. (I've looked in vain for a picture of it on the interweb). It's very neat. I believe they've patented it.

  • And that is why art is in the eye of the beholder

no thats why we invented logic, because some answers, and ways of thinking are better then others, and the more we test our ways of thinking the better we can make them.

    have fun with your arroporn

  • rawr
is that lugged and fillet brazed?

Don't know if anyone answered you adoubletap? I was looking at dogsballs 'bash' bake at the weekend, it has a similar detail but with the lugs on the ehad tube and not on the top/down tubes. It's lugged, but then the lug's extension is filed off on one join to make them look fillet-brazed. I think!

But the more I'm looking at that the more I think it might somehow be both.

  • Clark of C3 customs was talking to me about designing tubing i with built in lugs, hydro cut to a form that has been done on a cat program, could easily be what we are seeing here

  • chris crash, u mug, 'your theory' of art is nothing more than wishy washy romanticism, expressed in an overly simplistic manner. The notion that 'art' refers to objects that posess no untility is patantly absurd - where does that leave literature? Where would you draw the line between utility and aesthetic satisfaction?

have u never read any aristotle? all art serves a dual purpose - to insturct and delight - and suggesting that you can neatly seperate these properties is absurd.

  • no thats why we invented logic, because some answers, and ways of thinking are better then others, and the more we test our ways of thinking the better we can make them.

Did we invent logic? Or did Dr Arrospock . . . logic is illogical, we use it to rationalize the irrational and justify the unjustifiable . . life is simple and most of the time we think too much, when we should just get on with it.

If i like something and find it beautifull, to me its art. If i don't like something, and someone else does thats their business not mine.

Anyway it has occurred to me that its utterly illogical to be having an argument on the internet when the sun is shining and my bike (which is a long way from being remotely qualified as bike porn) is primed for riding

  • that is so nice it hurts.

  • Top tube protectors are so last century

  • no bike can be art, they can still look good with out being art

scratch the surface of any art theory and you will quickly see that art has never nor will ever 'exist of aesthetic reasons alone'

  • that is so nice it hurts.

    Isn't that a polo bike?

  • Hot Damn!

  • None of those are ever going to be on bikes.

There are 50 being made, and shops have to become premium Brooks retailers to get a chance to get 1 of them.

A shop with 1 saddle will use it to promote their status and won't sell it.

They will be worth a bomb as the price some people will be prepared to pay will creep skywards until some shops part with them.

  • it did momentarily make me think about opening up a bike shop to get the premium status though...

  • what are those saddles (the normal variety) called.
I think the Bob Jackson might deserve one...

    • tis my 21st soon so could ask the rentals...

  • im quite sure its a swallow..

  • a tad expensive/ overpriced

maybe a choping of a b17 would be better, lots on here about it, give it a search

  • i know about the chopping. prob going to do that too (for another bike). But for the BJ I think the overpricedness of it is worthwhile (and hey, I won't be paying!)
    thanks aidan.
    [edit: £151, holy shit]

  • They will very soon become the thing that bike thieves focus on.

High value, last forever, easy to sell on, easy to remove from a locked bike.

  • true. Its definately a consideration.
but I do like the look of them.

  • you can get a standard swallow ti for about 130 at wiggle. and it'sa very nice saddle

  • lol,

seriously what are people doing paying £150 on a saddle?

Anyone who does... it's their round at the bar.
