Never, Never Get Punctures = True

  • I meant to post these pics a while ago.
Got Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres running on my two bikes.
These photographs are from the back tyre of my commute-mobile after four months of heavy riding through Winter, skids, off road, ride to Cambridge etc.
The remaining rubber on the back was still thicker than your average road tyre when I took them off.
Without doing trackslides I reckon they would last near forever.
If you don't mind a bit of extra weight in your wheels and can handle riding something other than a 23c (as the smallest they do is 25c) I recommend them.

  • rolling resistance.

  • Htfu

  • Does HTFU mean "buy cheap shit and sacrifice ride quality"?

I like my low rolling resistance, high puncture resistant Conti 4000's.

in london, yeah it makes a big difference!!
i prefer a bombproof tyre like an armidillo that you know won't puncture if it gets glass in it.

  • Me and Max were extolling the virtues of Schwalbes generally on Monday night; the Stelvio Plus looks like a good compromise 23c and a thinner layer of that same Smartguard puncture protection.

I'm running an Ultremo on the front with Vectran and a Stelvio on the back with Raceguard at the moment and haven't had a flat yet with them.

  • "Ultremo on the front with Vectran" sounds like aliens from star trek or something.

  • been running gators, for about a year now, not one puncture, 3rd tyre on the back been wearing them down to the thread too.

  • ^ do gatorskins wear really quickly if you skidd? My tub only lasted a week. and they're slippery when wet..

  • gatorskin seem to be softer and i run that on the front, armidillo rear!

  • 23c all the way. I'll never sell out to 25c. I've only ever had pinch flats and that's only when I've not been bothered to pump my tyres up enough.

  • Anyone use Specialized All Condition Pro?
I have the 26" version on my SS, run them at 105psi but they do cut up pretty easily but not many flats as long as you keep the pressure high.

They used it for the airbags on the Mars lander so you're not far wrong!

  • Despite some peoples bad experiences with Gatorskins, I'm loving mine at the moment.

Last week I swapped a rear Vittoria Zaffiro (23c) off for a 25c Gatorskin. Wow! Even at 105psi its a much smoother ride. It's also lighter, quicker, and more grippy too - it's a winner.

I've had loads of punc****s in the past with the contis on, but reckon its down to where i was riding and different tyres wouldn't have made a bit of difference (unless it was heavy armadillos or schwalbe marathons).

  • i run gators and armidillo at 115-120psi.

  • my bonty hardcases have cracks in the sidewalls now, even though they are not particularly worn down (been running them for over a year) I'd rather pay for something that lasts a bit longer.

have absolutely no clue what to replace them with..

  • gatorskins are o.k i ran mine for 11 months before i got a puncture, now on conti 4 seasons the ride quality is far superior to the gators due to higher tpi and they are much grippier too

I was going to get a pair for my MTB, but it doesn't sound like a ringing endorsement from you. Do you mean that they wear out quickly and that you get quite a few punctures? At the moment I've got armadillos, so I can't remember the last time I had a puncture.

I ran a pair for 18 months on my old Cannondale road bike. Even raced a few crits on them. Be sure to keep them at 120psi.

For once dogs is talking sense. After using an Armadillo on the cuntster I'm now looking for another to replace it. It still hasn't punctured but the front (non-dillo) has haha

Save the faster tyres for where rolling resistance actually matters.. the weekend bikes.

  • cheap rubinos all the way at 120-125psi. skidded to threads/shreds and never had a problem. when the back one is dead i just swap the front one to the back and put a new one on the front.

he still doesn't, he spelt armAdillo wrong.

  • armadillos are known as spoke brakers in the bike industry. Schwalbe stevilio plus all the way ive got them on my racer fixed and one on my polo bike no punctures.

  • I ran ArMADillos (25c and £20 a pop) for a long time (perhaps 2500 miles) and got a puncture every 200 miles. Without fail. Glass was often the culprit. I have now switched to Michelin Lithions (23c and £11 a pop) and have had but one puncture over 700 miles and counting. I'll stick with the Lithions for a while, methinks. They also have significantly less rolling resistance. It's a no brainer.

Yeah, because punctures aren't an issue on weekend rides to... er... Brighton?

(I am not advocating heavy reinforced tyres though, because I hate them)
