105 brakes aren't overkill on anything, this statement makes no sense.
they stop you. they stop you better than other brakes. there might not be a lot in it, but they certainly work well. it has nothing to do with the frame or the quality of the other components and everything to do with how much you want to stop with only a front brake. tiagra would be ok, but 105 better.
