  • Right, I'm after a new set of pedals. Budget is £50 max I reckon, but if I can get something decent for a lot less I'm fine with that. I'll be using them with clips & straps for average town riding, so no SPD/ATAC backchat, ok? ;)

What do you fellows reccomend? Lets discuss over some tea

  • i like the look and feel of neuvo wides

slightly better platform-age for chunkier shoes.

..cant seem to find them in the uk though as i need to get myself a set

  • Hubjub do em, but I think presently out of stock

  • Aye, the nuevo wides look lovely. Unfortunately theres no way I can justify the best part of £90 on a pair of pedals, thats chris king money ;)

  • look i know it's not fancy and posh-like, but i rike mks sylvans and i've never had any complaints

  • the mks sylvans are ok..but if you have big feet, maybe the welgo ones from wiggle, like this:

or these mks ones from SJS:

  • i had this very same query, well done fc9k.

is this really it as far as selection goes? the bog standard mks sylvans aren't great quality (lots of play on mine) but the all-singing all-dancing njs ones are mega expensive. might go clipless after all.

  • time attacs...

or welgos if your into that kind of thing

  • fc9k no SPD/ATAC backchat, ok? ;)

    chris crash time attacs...

come on chris, even I managed to hold back on that..

  • you know that i see no point in holding back.

  • MKS Sylvan Lites, really clean look, unlike those GR-9s, yuck.

You can use straps with any of these: http://www.benscycle.net/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=188_246

  • Yeah, i like the look of those lites. Any idea of UK stockists? Havent seen them before on my rambles.

  • don't go for the wellgo ones from wiggle. I'm using them at the moment, and I think the bearings are bugged already. There's a couple of mm of play in them when I apply back pressure to the pedals. It drives me nuts.

I'm going to get some atacs in a few weeks me thinks :)

  • What's the deal with atacs? Any good?

  • General concensus is yes, since they don't accidentally unclip like SPDs. But I rode SPDs for a year and what pissed me off the most was having to carry a spare pair of shoes every time I left the house.

Great for commuting I guess if you can leave your normal shoes at work, but it doesn't suit me.

  • i have custom nuevos and gr9s...both would work fine

  • Superprecise What's the deal with atacs? Any good?

mine work fine had them since july, lots better then clips and straps. messengered on them till october, and use them to comute and play around on. changed cleats last week as they where due. no problems other then that

  • fc9k Yeah, i like the look of those lites. Any idea of UK stockists? Havent seen them before on my rambles.

Im afraid I dont know of any, Bens is the only place Ive seen that carries em.

  • I really, really like my Sylvans - I literally can't find a single thing wrong with them, and they cost me $30 brand new at full retail! That's peanuts.

  • So which sylvans chaps? Track, touring or road?

I'm leaning towards the track for minimum pedal strike, but I guess they're all much of a muchness in other respects?

  • I've got the road/quill ones on my Mercian and they're absolutely fine, no complaints... Cheap as chips too...

  • i have the road sylvans and they ain't that great.

  • Only work with straps and cages. Comfy, no pedal strike, work well with soft soled shoes, don't catch on the soles of shoes with any tread.

Edited to add - I have Atacs too, which I use for commuting/training. The MKS come out for idling around like a hipster poseur on the weekend when I can't be arsed to sweat.

  • I have MKS Sylvan Track pedals on my track bike - I find them very very slippy (having minimal wiggly grippiness on the tops) and hard to catch/turn over, even with big squelchy treaded-footwear. They look so nice though and I'm hoping I'll get used to them.

On my road bike I have those welgo things (I think - I pilfered them from my boy, I might be competely wrong but they have a name that's very similar) - fugly but very comfy, no complaints. (so I suppose I have the opposite opinion of those already stated - but there's always two sides etc etc).

  • i have the road sylvans and they ain't that great.

What problem do you have with them?
