The felling safer thing is a problem with many modern cars I believe. While the brakes are better they have abs e.t.c If you have never driven and old banger without all the safety features you don't realize how fast 50 mph can feel and how easily a little rain means you need to drive a lot more cautiously. I think this is why you see so many people driving like manics in the wet / ice e.t.c because they have even forgot or have never driven a car which actually shows them how fragile their grip and control is on the road. Hence people take more risks because their vechile feel just as secure at all speeds and conditions even though it isn't.
