Riding drunk

  • I can't really remember riding home last night. East End to Muswell Hill.

Workmate's birthday bash and i only intended to stay for a couple, but there was free champagne and i got into a couple of discussions and before i knew it i was unlocking my bike in an advanced state of swaying drunkeness. Sore head this morning, and also have a little twinge of guilt as well... What if I'd caused an accident?

On another note though, it seems that I am better balanced on my bike than off when that drunk. Fell over when on my feet, but at least felt rock solid on the bike.

  • i accidentally got shitfaced last saturday, someone spiked my 6 pints, or the pipes were funny, and rode home. result: embarassign stack whilst trying to negotiate a kerb at very slow speed, in front of crowd of outdoor smokers.

  • I rode home pissed up last night, with headphones in as well. Oh dear.

Kept telling myself to take it easy but obviously ended up sprinting down Picadilly, heading for tiny gaps. I actually collided with a near stationary van, which put the shits up me a bit.

Must try not to get killed by being stupid...

  • Where's murtle's face? That's a warning against drink riding if ever I saw one.

  • Yeah but he did half of that pushing his bike along the road!

Crashing into a parked car was my 'wake up call' to cycling drunk. Hasn't stopped me tho - the best bit is you instantly become more pissed the moment your legs start pumping all that boozed up blood round your body!

Has anyone ever been done for drink riding? Can it effect your driving license if successfully nicked?

  • i was eddie merckx last night on the holloway road.

  • i don't drink and ride????

    oops

  • true, you just drink and crash ;)

  • shouldn't of said "gonna hit the road" when i was leaving :(

  • Cooking lager or wife-beater?

  • i have to say cycling drunk is a real intense pleasure. It's a bit like playing pool though - my ability gets better and better (probly in my head) and then i just get plain reckless and keep having inner monologues with myself to slow down. But I never can.

Interestingly I would rather ride drunk than stoned. I'd rather do anything else stoned though...

me. i would rather ride drunk than anything else.

  • Rode home drunk years ago around the villages of south cambridge, was sooo drunk the only way i could stay in a straight line was to follow the yellow lines (with one eye closed), didn't see the car parked outside the co-op and put my head straight through the rear tailgate window! oops....

  • Done it many a time, getting better at it.
Worst incident was after 7 pints of Krony, and a 2 mile journey home at 2am. Was being extra cautious doing an extra slow fixed turn, when I lost balance and fell. Luckily, no lookers. Checked bike over, no damage, rode on home. Got home parked the bike up next to porch, whilst fumbling to find keys. Bike decides to roll back and top tube scrapes against corner of brick wall. EEEEeeeekkk, spend 3 evenings touching up, cutting and lacquering paintwork. Also woke up to a nice bout of road rash on my knee. Still makes me cringe when it catches a bad ray of light (top tube not my knee!). Moral of the story, always take your hack bike to the pub!

  • I loved riding stoned back when I used to smoke.

  • i ride better after a couple of beers...i suppose it makes me more daring,i did bounce of a bus once.:)

  • Last month my friend got pretty trashed and fell on his face while riding. He got back on his bike and continued riding for a while before crashing into the pavement again and breaking his collar bone. At the hospital they found that his nose was broken from the first time he went down so I guess he was too drunk to notice that bit of it.

    oops

  • my worst ever drunk ride was from old st to dalston one night after an impromtu night watching the football. kept falling off at 2mph, actually feel asleep at one point lying on the pavement still stradling the bike. I missed my eurostar the next morning. Twat.

  • I once got so steaming the first thing I remember was waking up in my bed and realising there is a pool of blood next to me. Looked in the mirror and my 2 front teeth are broken in half and I'd bitten off the front of my tongue, no scrapes anywhere else at all. Still can't remember what happened but when I went downstairs to cycle to the hospital my handle bars were squint so I think I hit something. Not stopped me really but I'm definately more carefull.

  • I've never had an accident riding drunk before.. touch wood.

  • .......watch out for police cars..... ;-)

  • couple of years ago i remember dragging my bike down shaftsbury cause i was to drunk to ride or wheel it.
next thing i remember is being on my bike at old st round about.
then waking up with my bad brains t-shirt covered in spew.

  • very irresponsible ;-)

  • not much moral uproar about drunk cycling then no? he he
Have done some looking into the legality of it, and yeah - no real limit on what you drink - as long as you're in control of the bicycle then you're okay.

This article does say, however, that it's illegal to 'pedal furiously'. I'll have to watch out for rozzers coming down Muswell Hill then...
