Some people are offended by that word, some aren't. i don't think it's just about geography.
Its probably middle english, possibly from a nordic root i believe. Its only a word.
I adore them, so i don't see it as particularly useful as an invective. Unlike 'road-bike guy', which has gotta be the best dis' ever.
