- I love winding people up about them.
there does seem to be a herd mentality developing though

Not out west there isn't.

i don't think their R&D matches that of mavic with their maxtal aluminium and the sup welding technology used to join the rims
how many tdf teams use velocity compared to mavic and dt?
the only reason for buying velocity is vanity i can't see any price/performance advantages

Can 'vanity' be applied to a possession ? Vanity refers to pride in or admiration of your own appearance or achievements.
If I bought an orange bike because I thought the colour looked great would that be vanity ?
I agree with the rest of what you say though, you won't see too many King of the mountain winners climbing with a green rear Deep V and a front Pink.

Velocity deep vs are the motorola razr of the rim world. Not a great product, but sell by the bucketload because they look cool.
If mavic released cxp33's or (even better) open pros in powdercoat, there would be no competition.
-
• #157
but if you only want to cycle between hoxton and brick lane it's irrelevant what rims you have.
:-) -
• #158
hippy I'm sure their appeal lies in the deep section and multitude of colours.
I knew what i was dong when i bought them but i did it anyway.... i got deep Vs because i wanted coloured rims... in my defence I've bought mavic open pros that will eventually go on another bike.

Yep! DT Swiss / Mavic rims in a range of colours would be great.
Of course if you want a cool rim colour and good performance as well as light weight from a rim, buy a DT Swiss or Mavic and spray it up in whatever colour you want.

VelocitĂes are gay
Mavics are gayGay as in horrible quality

where can you get araya ambrosio or campag rims?
-
• #162
I wonder?
some dodgy euro old stock dealer?
-
• #164
Well damn I thought there might be a Velocity backlash in the offing.
I have a campy atlanta road wheelset with lovely deep rims but can't get the hubs to make em fixed... can you get Shamal rims with 36 holes? -

I probably deserve a special prize because I've got plain black Deep-Vs.
They're somewhat Australian in character: finish is basic, technology lacking.
Crude but effective.
However, for the goat-tracks that constitute roads in this city they're great. Mine have taken a proper beating without complaint.
I'd give thought to making sure the hubs can take the abuse too. My Formulas still run smooth but I've had a disintegrating locknut and the track nuts from the back wheel have literally collapsed. Not a big job to replace though.

Other than Brick Lane are there any other UK stockists for Deep Vs?
-
• #167
Cavendish/Holloway Cycles keep them.
53x12 in Colchester too.

anyone tried velocity aeroheads? they're light for clinchers but i've heard mixed reports about the quality.
-
• #169
^^^ I run Velocity Aeroheads (laced to Miche track hubs). They're lighter than Deep Vs, and I think they strike a good weight-to-strength balance. Decent build quality, and a little more understated (aesthetically) than Deep Vs. I like them.

also the bike and run chain stock them

Exactly ! :)
Ambiguous syntax !
But also the bike, and run! 'chain stock' them.
Bear left at zoo. :D

let me see you lace record hubs onto deep v's i'll kill ya. serious.
+1 for ambrosio or cxp33 silver. if you can find campag atlantas even better.
it's definitely worth getting better rims on the record hubs you wont regret it.
Velocity make more than just the Deep-V. You are right about it though - I'm sure their appeal lies in the deep section and multitude of colours.
