First single speed project - help!

  • I moved to london 6 months ago, and ditched the train/tube/bus commute very quickly for a bike, as it was sucking my will to live! Have caught the cycling bug after buying a sirrus comp (which I love), but really want to get into single speed for several reasons: seems fun, fancy a project, want a 'get around town bike' without some tw*t nicking my expensive sirrus, want to stretch myself

OK, about me: a beginner, (nearly) no cash left (so must be cheap!), can handle tools but never done a bike, would like to use some 2nd hand parts (save the planet etc), ideally track fork/ horizontal dropout frame.

I have spotted these frames on ebay, thoughts/advice please, (try not to laugh, i am a newbie!)

    Thanks!

  • failed post, new thread started - all computers fault obviously

  • You've got a range of frame sizes there. Do you know what size frame you need?

  • picnic = problem in chair not in computer :)

  • I am dropping in brixton cycles tomorrow to get advice on this, and to try out some sizes. I have a 51.5 cm frame on my sirrus comp at the moment, but not sure if that size is suitable for a road frame.

Am I barking up the wrong tree with those frame types?

  • trackframes are usually a bit smaller than road frames. I ride a 58 roadframe and my trackframes are between 55 and 57. You can always adjust a little with stem and seatpost.

  • pebkac

  • Save yerself a bundle and go down to Herne Hill tomorrow... I bought a complete track bike for £80 in the summer, spent a bit on it since but still worked out velly cheap... If the normal bods are down there you'll find a ton of old track stuff... Enjoy! :)

  • At leasdt I explained mine..

  • Helloo,

I am a pretty short girl and I have been looking for a very light courier bike for ages & I think I might have found one

it's an 18" frame - It's not the most handsome bike around but it's alloy and very very light so I'm told, going to view it tonight. Anyone think that looks terrible?

ALSO, I would like to get it resprayed & also get those awesome coloured wheels - I have been looking everywhere for them but can't find anything suitable, anyone know where I get them from?

    many many thanksyous

    Caroline

  • coloured wheels = deep Vs - Brick lane bikes, cavendish cycles, holloway cycles.

  • big jos at tour de ville has some rigida's that are cheaper the deep v's ;)

  • Hello Caroline :D

The bike is a bit, er, weird looking but you can always get those cable guides and the other braze-ons stripped off and maybe have it repainted.

'Those coloured wheels' are Velocity Deep V rims, which you can get from a lot of online bike shops (google it) and Brick Lane Bikes has a good selection.

However, if that's an 18" frame, chances are those are not 700c wheels and coloured Deep V's only come in 700c. The other thing you could do is get some smaller 650c wheels and powdercoat them (as I did), but it really is a lot of hassle because the anodising reacts very strangely to powdercoat, and you'll also have to sort out a braking surface (ie, mask or machine it off).

Of course, if that bike takes 700c wheels then you're good with coloured wheels straight off. But the money you spend on those rims, you might want to save to buy a nicer frame?

And also you should come to Trixie Chix on a Tuesday night - use the search function for the thread.

  • look like 700c

  • [edit] all is fine

  • BRM Why can't I see the pitcha?

    your eyes are closed?

  • You're on fire today.

  • Come to this:
https://www.londonfgss.com/discussion/2512/13/trixie-chix/#Item_13, whatever kind of bike you have.

  • Sorry about the pic - managed to overload the angelfire server I have moved it now.

Hmm, I guess it is a bit of an ugly frame, it is alloy though - I am obsessed with the idea of having a very light bike.

  • computer says no. singel speeds need 2 breaks, why is that bike wearing center pull breaks when it has braze ons for more effective cantilever ones? and its ugler then that mole on hippys arse

steel is real, and if you are putting deep vs on that bike for get about light weight.

  • Only one brake?

If you're worried about weight, then you probably won't want to be adding heavy deep Vs...

Also, I'd probably keep an eye out for something with horizontal dropouts - you'll limit your choices if you ever decide to go fixed.

  • Yeah? Well you guys are the pros - I will wait for a steel one then. I work just opposite brick lane bikes and as lovely as their stuff is I couldn't help but get the feeling everything was a rip off in there. They wanted t charge me £300 for an orange 'dawes frame' with no serial ?? Sounded fishy to me, it was lovely though, and small.

  • That singulatored bike up there ^^^ is from those people off gumtree isn't it?

http://www.gumtree.com/london/09/20584009.html I'm surprised they haven't got some stick from here yet...

Apart from the single speed - one brake thing (which i'm guily of myself) if you're going to go to all that effort of a respray, new wheels etc. maybe a cycle speedway bike to get round the fact that (like me) you're one of the little people is a better idea?

Then you get horizontal drop outs, potentially slightly smaller wheels, but they're intentially made smaller... I got my girlfriend one, she's only 5' 1 or something and it suits her. That and I like cycling on a bike with pink tassles on it.
